What users are saying:
possibly the best deli in houston imo
by fayo16 at Citysearch
i have been going to this place since i was able to walk. this homey little slice of heaven is one of houstons best kept little secrets. i usually get the turkey on rye or pumpernickel and the pasta salad is quite literally to die for. and to top it off i have never met so homely and genuine people. i could not possibly recommend this place any higher!! trust me on this one, you will not be disappointed!!!
- Pros: everything!!!!
- Cons: parking can be the deffinition of cramped at times
One of the town's top delis, a lunchtime favorite for Inner Loopers.

The Scene
This pint-size sandwich shop is as white and tight as the waxed paper that wraps its sandwiches. The Nielsens, a third-generation family of deli owners from Denmark, arrived in Houston to open their first location in Highland Village in the 1950s. This Richmond Avenue location has become a lunch favorite for Inner Loop neighborhoods, Galleria businesses and many points between.
The Food
Can homemade mayonnaise be the key to success? That rich, whipped snowy concoction put Nielsen's on the deli map. But let's get down to the meat of the matter: the "regular" sandwich, 3.5 ounces, is huge, and the "junior," 2.5 ounces, is also generous. The turkey breast is roasted on site. The rare roast beef is just as lean and clean; corned beef, pastrami and ham also fare well. The whole-wheat bread with a honey-flavored edge and sturdy crust is a signature item, but white, rye and pumpernickel are excellent also. Side salads like the egg-endowed, mayonnaise-enriched potato salad; refreshing beet salad; and classic red cabbage salad are justly famous.
