Average items with tiny selection and a good Gingerbread man
by LarryBrown at Citysearch
Well, we visited this bakery on the tentative recommendation of Mike Kahn out at Kahn's deli in the village because we were looking for someone that could bake the fabulous French pastries the way we used to get them at Alfred's delicatessen until 1995 when Alfred died and the deli shut down. (Mike is Alfred's son).
Very limited selection. No Mocha cake, no black forest cake, no fruit tarts, petit fours come in only two flavors. Similar to what you would find at Kroger or HEB.
From best to worst:
Ginger bread man - excellent. Soft texture rather than the usual crunchy. Excellent flavor and texture, tasted like the Lieb Kuchen we get from Germany.
Petit Fours - Good. Similar to other Petit Fours, they are extremely sweet, which doesn't appeal to everyone. More like candy. These are twice as big as the usual little cubes, a time saving measure, and the decoration is minimal. That's bad, but only two flavors? That really misses the point of Petit Fours being a delightful assortment of jewel like treats.
Creme eclair-almost better than average. Bread tastes like water.
Strawberry cake with cream cheese icing - Average. Bought on the recommendation of another reviewer on this review board. Similar to what you would get at HEB or Kroger, or make yourself with a box mix. How anyone could think this cake is "the best ever" is beyond me. Again, the cake is very sweet. The cream cheese icing is extremely sweet, and the combination makes for an over the top taste, similar to other American Style cakes. Almost no decoration.
Tiramisu - inedible. No coffee flavor, no liquor flavor, the cake portion was dry, and the cream portion tasted like whipped shortening. The cream portion is supposed to be mascarpone cheese, but I'm sure it wasn't that. This item earned the bakery a less than average rating.
For a better risk, try: Croissant Brioche French Bakery & Cafe, 2435 Rice Blvd, in the Village. Their attractive cakes are good and they have a much bigger assortment.
- Pros: Gingerbread man
- Cons: Inedible Tiramisu, too sweet, tiny selection
