Average items with tiny selection and a good Gingerbread man
by LarryBrown
Well, we visited this bakery on the tentative recommendation of Mike Kahn out at Kahn's deli in the village because we were looking for someone that could bake the fabulous French pastries the way we used to get them at Alfred's delicatessen until 1995 when Alfred died and the deli shut down. (Mike is Alfred's son).
Very limited selection. No Mocha cake, no black forest cake, no fruit tarts, petit fours come in only two flavors. Similar to what you would find at Kroger or HEB.
From best to worst:
Ginger bread man - excellent. Soft texture rather than the usual crunchy. Excellent flavor and texture, tasted like the Lieb Kuchen we get from Germany.
Petit Fours - Good. Similar to other Petit Fours, they are extremely sweet, which doesn't appeal to everyone. More like candy. These are twice as big as the usual little cubes, a time saving measure, and the decoration is minimal. That's bad, but only two flavors? That really misses the point of Petit Fours being a delightful assortment of jewel like treats.
Creme eclair-almost better than average. Bread tastes like water.
Strawberry cake with cream cheese icing - Average. Bought on the recommendation of another reviewer on this review board. Similar to what you would get at HEB or Kroger, or make yourself with a box mix. How anyone could think this cake is "the best ever" is beyond me. Again, the cake is very sweet. The cream cheese icing is extremely sweet, and the combination makes for an over the top taste, similar to other American Style cakes. Almost no decoration.
Tiramisu - inedible. No coffee flavor, no liquor flavor, the cake portion was dry, and the cream portion tasted like whipped shortening. The cream portion is supposed to be mascarpone cheese, but I'm sure it wasn't that. This item earned the bakery a less than average rating.
For a better risk, try: Croissant Brioche French Bakery & Cafe, 2435 Rice Blvd, in the Village. Their attractive cakes are good and they have a much bigger assortment.
- Pros: Gingerbread man
- Cons: Inedible Tiramisu, too sweet, tiny selection
Moeller's is the best!
by JenniferStokesYoung
Moeller's is the best ever! I am 40 and have been enjoying their white sheet cake for almost that long. As a young girl I went to the Rice Village location and have followed them to Bellaire. I do not care as much for the chocolate or layered cakes but I wouldn't have a birthday for me or my children without a Moeller's white sheet cake with their traditional pastel icing!
cake was mediocre, but cookies were great!

i ordered a regular white birthday cake, after reading all the rave reviews....but was extrremely disappointed....it tasted okay, but much like something i could have made out of a box myself....the frosting was very thick and sweet, much like what you buy in the grocery aisle made by betty crocker or pillsbury.....not pleased at all......however, the sugar cookies are great and reasonably priced....would definitely go back for the cookies.........they had a lot of delicious looking pastries, which i did not try but plan on next time!
- Pros: dinosaur sugar cookies
- Cons: white birthday cake and frosting
Best Gingerbread Men Ever
by Jodie427
I have lived in Houston for 42 years and never visited Moeller's until a few weeks ago. On day one I bought petit-fours and chocolate chewy cookies. The following day I went back for more petit-fours and chocolate chewy cookies in addition to gingerbread men (totally great); ranger cookies, and sugar cookies. It was during the holidays so everything was decorated wonderfully. I had read the service was bad, but my experience was totally opposite. It was me who slowed down my order because I couldn't make up my mind. The individuals working there were great and even let me sample a few things before I bought them.
I can't wait to be back in that area gain.
- Pros: Great Cookies
make sure you get what you pay for....

The petit fours are adorable, and the taste is a bit above par. CAUTION: Check the box before you leave the bakery. On two occasions, I made it to the party lacking at least half a dozen (paid for) petit fours. I know, I know...I should have checked, but I was in a hurry...and the box was covered and stapled closed. Also, do NOT expect friendly service b/c this isn't the place for smiles and helpful employees (this comment is not based on a one-time experience...have been there many times).
No Flavor Cocolate Cake.
by spartangirl
I picked up a chocolate cake with butter cream icing for my son's birthday. It was the worst cake we have had. I usually buy from 3 Brothers Bakery who makes excellent cakes. But, they are closed due to Hurricane Ike. There is no flavor to the chocolate cake. It may might as well be white or yellow. The icing is stiff and way too sweet. There is no creaminess to it. I will not be buying cakes from them again. Randall's makes better cakes and they are much cheaper.
- Pros: location
- Cons: cakes
My thought...
by mammaadams
This bakery has been a childhood favorite. Every birthday I had a cake from Moellers. Their pastries, orange rolls, strawberry cake, peti-fours..etc...are to die for!! Moellers is a very original bakery. They will make you feel right at home. They do however, have their set backs with some of their workers. What customer service place doesn?t? We all have a perspective in this. How were you feeling the day you were being waited on? Was everything going your way? We have those days when no one can make us happy. Dont blame it on people who probably have nothing to do with your problem. i am not saying they are perfect, but nither are we. I thank the people at Moellers for having to deal with some of the people who come there. I have been there during Christmas... KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK!
- Pros: great food!!!
Moeller's still the best
by copope
Moeller's has consistently been our favorite bakery in Houston. From their original location in West U, their breakfast pastries and petit fours are a family "must". My birthday cakes from my first to, shall we say, more recent have always been excellent. There is nothing like Moeller's to make you feel like it is made just for you! Although I find service a tad slow, it is part of Moellers and I still will highly recommend them for sugary sweets.
Awesome Mouthwatering Petit Fours
by tawestberry
For over 20 years I've been in the Hotel & Restaurant Industry. Without fail, I always rely on Moeller's Bakery. They're Petit Fours are to die for...not to mention all the other yummie things they bake. I could eat a dozen or more in one sitting! You must try them!
Birthdays aren't birthdays without a Ms. Moeller's cake!
by shabrams
I have been eating Moeller's cakes/petit fors my whole life! I'm a choc-o-holic except when it comes to white-on-white birthday cake from Moeller's. Her cakes literally make a birthday. Did I mention how friendly and efficient they always are? Definitely the best bakery in town...
