AWESOME Steaks!!!!

by tx_rsr at Citysearch

I love this place. The steaks are AWESOME and the service is great. You can walk up to the butcher counter and choose your own steak.

Unfortunately, the average wait to get a table is just a little over an hour if you have 4 in your party. Anything over 4 and the wait increases by about 45 minutes to an hour. I have come to accept this as part of the dinning experice at the Taste of Texas so I don't go there often.

So, if you and your guest can live with the waiting time to sit down, I highly recommend it.

  • Pros: The Steaks are AWESOME!!!!
  • Cons: Takes for over an hour to get a table on a busy night

awesome beef

My friends and I love a great steak and we have been here a couple a times and it was good I was not all together please with the wait to be seated and we had a reservation for a birthday. the service is good once we got to our seats. I think for the price you pay that when you take the time to make a reservation you get seated when you get there not 25 min and they could make the bar more accessible for those people that are waiting or have a waitress help with taking orders

  • Pros: The cuts of the meat was good the price
  • Cons: The wait time is awful

good food but pretty pricey

by tx07 at Citysearch

I went here because I got a gift certificate- I wanted to try it because I had never been here. Walking it, it was a bit surreal- I have never seen so many people waiting in one place. That said, there is a great waiting area with snacks and drinks, and the numbers go up on a screen so they are not constantly yelling out people's names. We had to wait, but they have a nice bar area and we were actually seated before we were supposed to be, so that was nice. The salad bar was fun- probably my favorite part of the menu. Our steaks were pretty good, but priced exactly the same as the steakhouses downtown, which I thought was a little excessive. I enjoyed my meal, but I wouldn't pay that kind of money without the gift certificate at this place- I would go to one of the many many other excellent steakhouses in town. If you have someone in from out of town and want to show them something very "Texas" I would say this would be a good place to go .

  • Pros: pretty good food
  • Cons: price too much for this food

You get what you came for

Anyone that wants to complain about a wait at the Taste of Texas, go to another steak house then and let me have your table!! The wait is long because the steaks are exquisite and everyone loves them. Nothing can compare to their filets, bacon wrapped with some garlic butter, its well worth the wait. Some people complain that their chicken dishes are sub par but guess what its a steakhouse, why go to a steak house for chicken! I would suggest sitting in the bar area, I always am well taken care of in the bar and the bartenders are always very helpful.

  • Pros: Bar area, steak add ons
  • Cons: service, hostesses

Choose your own cut and enjoy a hearty meal with the family at this visually intriguing and hunger-satisfying steakhouse.

In Short
The popular steakhouse features rough cedar and brick walls, plus a collection of museum-quality artifacts and collectibles from Texas history. Steak fanatics can visit the butcher shop and have a slab of rib eye cut to their liking. For the less adventurous, the menu is filled with specific cuts and weights--a huge porterhouse, a sturdy T-bone and some select filets that can be paired with shrimp. Salad and a side order are included.

yihah

Salad bar is great. Not too big, but great variety, a cheese block, fresh breads etc. Very much a "Big Texas" kind of place. "Yihah" and red scarf is compulsory for new guests.. a unique gesture to welcome the guests..

  • Pros: salad bar, service, bread
  • Cons: expensive

Hmm.. Mixed reviews from me.

My mom really should have complained on Mother's Day after sitting for close to two hours in line, after her spinach stuffed chicken was "disgusting". She refused because she didnt' want to ruin the reputation of this classy restaurant. Its self evident that they take pride in their food and service, but that chicken did taste terrible. I had the prime rib and thoroughly enjoyed it. I love this place, the cheese and bread bar rocks! I just felt bad for my mom not being able to enjoy her dinner.

  • Pros: Prime Rib, Cheese bar
  • Cons: Too pricey, Nasty Chicken

Aptly Named

by thatmanfromtexas at Citysearch

I was first introduced to Taste Of Texas when my son's 4th grade class visited there on a school field trip. Dining there is a thouroughly enjoyable event, from the well scrubbed, excrutiatingly polite staff to the endless supply of fresh baked breads to being able to specify how many ounces and which cut of steak your heart desires . Thoroughly professional, down home friendly and a total lack of pretension (Though I was amused by the explanation in the menu : What a tip is, How much and why you should pay it and that it wasn't already in the bill).

  • Pros: Excellent Food, Great Service

I think it is a very good family resturant but I don't think it rates number 1 as a steakhouse. To be a great steakhouse, the meat should be prime beef, number one and it should be an elegant with classic decor such as Ruth's or Pappas with similar type service.

Good and Bad features

by anniecue at Citysearch

I though the salad bar and bread was a good idea. When my children were younger they would have been happy to have this type of food served to them so quickly. The wine list was a bit pricey but good choices.

My biggest complaint is I like steak but not such a big one. I like a 6 to 8 ounce steak and do not want to share one with someone else. I, also, do not like to take a steak home as they never reheat very well.

Outside of that, service was even and very informative. This was the first time I had been there. But, quite asking if it is a "special occasion". They will tell you.

  • Pros: Salad, Breads, Desserts
  • Cons: Loud, Big food, Serving sizes
