adequate food; much is wrong
by cmk1126 at Citysearch
This place is too expensive in light of the quality of food. This place is oddly popular, making the no-reservations policy tremendously oppressive. And it's very "suburban" in the worst ways.
- Pros: food is OK
- Cons: several
Lifetime customer, but will NEVER return
by csfh at Citysearch
If I were rating the food, I would give it 4 stars; however, my latest experience was so bad that Taste of Texas has lost a lifetime customer.
Website says "family-friendly," but it is NOT. If small children are a problem, this term should not be used. Apparently loud obnoxious salesmen are not a problem, because the table next to us carried on as much as they wanted.
- Pros: great steaks
- Cons: rude, not family friendly
Overpriced for the quality but great Ambience, Certainly not a WINE BAR
by thebestcritic at Citysearch
Taste of Texas is below average based on the available steakhouses in Houston. Their strongest suit is the decor and overpriced wine list which carries some very nice labels, but at a premium price. Steaks are not on the level of Capital Grill, Pappas, Morton's, Ruth's, and etc. They rank somewhere between those mentioned and the Texas Land and Cattle, and Saltgrass quality. It is a great place to take foreign visitors for the ambience and "Texas" decor; during Christmas holidays they decorate beautifully. Side dishes are not comparible to the "upper end" steakhouses in Houston. A great salad bar with cheeses and wonderful breads. If you were to rank it on it's own without comparison to our "upper end" steakhouses, it would fair much better.
I can't belive TofT shows up as a wine bar. IT IS DEFINATELY NOT A WINE BAR!!!
- Pros: Ambience, Texas Decor, Salad Bar
- Cons: Overpriced, Outrageous wine prices, Long wait for tables
Too long of a wait for too tough of a steak
by gmalone at Citysearch
I'd heard about this place for years and finally had a chance to dine there with friends and was sorely disappointed. We were there on a Tuesday night and it was very crowded and loud. Cocktails were watered down and the service was chaotic (waiter was watching a movie on a child's laptop at a neighboring table). I ordered the porterhouse which was the toughest steak I'd had in years. I would have a very hard time recommending this to anyone and probably won't go back unless someone else who is paying the tab insists.
- Pros: Good wine list.
- Cons: No ambience, like dining at McDonalds.
Completely Over Rated
by nwt88 at Citysearch
i was visiting from northern california and wanted to get the authentic texas experience. service was absolutely horrible here! basically, had to wait for an hour before seating. then, the hostess made us wait another 15 minutes after our number was called because she was busy chit chatting with her colleagues. After we were seated, the waiters had to "change over responsibility" for some reason and we had to go through the entire order again.
from a food persepctive, the salad bar reminded me of sizzler. completely self serve and frankly very cheap. the steak was below average at best. i asked for medium and it came well done and extremely dry. the garlic butter had no flavor and my spinach side order was essentially tasteless. the only thing foodwise that was good was the bread, which i could have gotten at "sweet tomato" or "fresh choice".
- Pros: bread
- Cons: service, steak, salad bar
Taste of Golden Corral??
by batkins at Citysearch
This is one of Houston's worst examples of steak houses. Unfortunately, they have a wonder setting and offer a "good feeling" of being in a Texas Eatery. But the food is lacking and not worth the price. If you want to enjoy the ambiance...eat CHICKEN!!! Save you Steakbuds for somewhere else.
- Pros: Setting, ambiance, salad bar
- Cons: steak, prices, wait
LONG WAITS
by KathyKaplan at Citysearch
Although the steaks are fairly decent... the wait will drive a sane person to the brink.... If you have kids this is the place to go, if they don't mind waiting.. When paying those prices you certainly don't want to have to help yourself at the salad bar... I will always pick one of the other steakhouses in town, especially considering they take RESERVATIONS!!!!
- Pros: popular, good for kids
- Cons: loud, long waits, salad bar
What a Disappointment
by markdbell at Citysearch
What a disappointment and waste of time. I've heard so much about Taste of Texas--it's rated as one of the best steakhouses in Texas--so I was excited about going there and having a great steak. I could berate this restaurant for hours, but I'll just list my main criticisms. (1) For an expensive, upscale restaurant, I didn't expect to be herded into a waiting room with popcorn, cokes, and nachos. (2) The food absolutely was awful. I ordered a 16 oz rib eye, the best and most tender steak around, and I received a chunk of overcooked, tough, tasteless meat. I thought it was a tough sirloin. (3) Way overpriced for the value. I've had better steaks at bars. There are much better steakhouses around, especially in Houston not to waste your time there.
- Pros: Service
- Cons: Expensive, Poor Food Quality
Bonanza
by timwalker at Citysearch
If I have to stand in line for a steak, I'll not eat one. THis place, although the steaks are good, is more like an up-scale sizzler or Bonanza or Ryans. I like to have my salads prepared and delivered, rather than to be allowed to graze at the salad bar as many patrons do. Most of th steaks are USDA Choice Certifed Angus. Can someone describe how you certify an Angus? My Dachsund is registered too, but it doesn't mean every Dachsund is goiing to look, act or feel the same. Certified Black Angus is a Trademarked name only.
Diners need to be informed of the differencecs of Select, Choice and Prime cuts as administered by the USDA.
On a positive note, for this type of restaraunt, I'll put their wine lists besides al,ost any in Houston.
- Pros: Wine List
- Cons: Steaks, Waiting, Salad Bar Line
Completely Over-rated!
by Lips_2003 at Citysearch
Taste of Texas is completely over-rated in my opinion on steaks. The "sizzling hot" plate continues cooking the meat and typically I have ended up with an over-done steak. Very minimal seasoning of the meat makes this over-done meant even less appealing.
