Of two minds on this place
by hepcatblues
July 08, 2009
[Note: Citysearch apparently has some problem with people writing the word BLUDD in reviews (the real word, the stuff that flows through your veins), so I had to change the spelling because BLUDDY items not being disposed of properly is part of my review.]
I've taken two of my cats here on two different occasions. Both times each one had a fever and few other outward signs of illness.
My first visit was actually pretty great; the tech confirmed she had a fever, was firm but gentle with her and he seemed mature. The doctor was very pleasant and appeared knowledgeable (I didnt' get but a few minutes with her, though). They couldn't determine the cause of the fever so gave me a broad spectrum antibiotic because it seemed like an infection. The medication DID work, even though they didn't figure out what was wrong with her. I don't mind the facility--it doesn't look like your shiny vet's office but considering the part of town and the amount of pet traffic they see, this is not so bad at all.
My second visit, however--ugh! Same doctor, and she was just as pleasant. I have no complaints about her yet. She still wanted to do tests and didn't push medication from the get-go until she understood exactly what was wrong. THE TECHS, on the other hand--know when you go that the TECHS DO ALMOST ALL THE WORK. That is why this place is cheap. My tech couldn't have been but just out of high school and clearly didn't know (or seem to care to know) anything about the animals or the treatment. He knew how to operate a pill popper and a thermometer, however.
When they drew bludd, the bluddy leftover needle was left (by a different tech) willy-nilly on the counter in our exam room (which had a sign that said "Sick Dogs Only") and there were additional droplets of bludd nearby. I WAS HANDED what should have been MEDICAL WASTE when I was given a "free" used pill popper with bluddy fingerprints on it. Whose bludd? Whose fingerprints from handling these items without gloves on? I have no idea! And it doesn't even work!
Conclusion: I would go here again, but I would take care to note who is on duty that day and how much experience they look like they really have. Take note of their demeanor and make the best decision for your pet! They do have some nice techs, but I guess they weren't available when I was there.
Exam (including a quick fecal): $15
Bludd test: $35
Meds: $15
- Pros: Very affordable, short wait
- Cons: Untrained techs, facility

the first time i went there i was so desperate my cat had a terrible abcess and another vet had quoted me over $700 to get her all fixed up. i came home and looked up low cost vets in houston and they were my first result. they took her in on an emergency basis and took her into surgery right away. i picked her up less that two hours later and she made a 100 % recovery..for about $100 as well. since then i have taken my two dogs there for their preventative care and the staff is always ready to answer any questions you have..i live about an hour away from this clinic but it is totally worth it for me and my pets
- Pros: great staff cheap prices
- Cons: minimal parking
Love this place!

I have been here for a bladder infection for my dog as well as routine vaccinations. Both times everyone was very nice and the bill was much lower than expected. If you have a dog check this place out.
- Pros: Price, staff
- Cons: Parking, no website
Great Vet

I took my pug in for a rash. The staff was sweet to my doggie and I had a sense that they all really like dogs. They skillfully drew her tests and I was in and out in under an hour. This is my new vet in Houston.
- Pros: friendly staff, short wait, low prices
- Cons: tight parking
Horrible Clinic

After hearing how cheap this vet clinic was, I decided to go check it out. My mom had my child and I had the dog (small terrier) on a leash. We had to fight for a parking spot in the parking lot and the clinic said to "park in the ditches or alley in back". My mom said, under no circumstances was she parking her car out there. We began to get out of the car and suddenly a guy who appeared to be in a gang's dog that was on a CHAIN (can you say animal cruelty) began trying to jump out of the window at my dog. Next, a man who had his German shepherd mix OFF the leash also started coming at us. I screamed at the man to get his dog on a leash and told my mom, "let's go to our regular vet, price isn't worth us getting mauled to death". I have no clue of the quality of the vet or his staff. But the reason this place is so cheap is clearly due to the lack of having to pay for an adequate and safe facility... I had no intentions of getting my child mauled, myself, mom, or exposing my pure breed dog to this trashy place.
- Pros: Maybe Price?
- Cons: Everything else.
Lower Cost but Horrible Area

The area this clinic is located in is not the safest area of Houston, so do not leave anything in your vehicle.
The staff are nice, efficient and polite but I felt out of place being the only non-dark skinned person there. Most of the clientele spoke Spanish as their first language and there were some guys that I could only assume were g*ng members who brought in a dog that was obviously just in a dog fight.
People stared at me as if I didn't belong there because I don't live in the hood. I have a dog that is always having problems and going to the vet can be expensive - even this past visit at the low cost clinic I spent nearly $70.
An exam is $15, shots are reasonable, but the medication isn't cheap.
If your dog needs a shot then this is a good place to go to, but there is no privacy - there are no actual rooms since everything is open. The wait was only minimal as well so I was pleased with that as compared to the Wellness Clinic on Durham.
There are a lot of "street" dogs so if you have a Shi-Tzu or poodle, you might feel out of place. No appointments necessary. First come, first served but they have a lot of staff so you won't wait too long.
- Pros: Exam is only $15
- Cons: The area is dodgy
Thank God for the Low Cost Clinic!

My dog messed up her leg and couldn't walk on it, i was afraid it would be a break, and would cost hundreds of dollars to get fixed. I didn't see what happened, but I knew I had to get her fixed up, even though i don't even have enough money for the bills... I didn't want to go to my regular vet because the last time i went to see them, i had to wait 45 minutes for my APPOINTMENT, and then they only saw my cat for 2 minutes, plus anything there would of been expensive. So i looked up low cost clinics and found this one. I didn't have an appointment, but they told me to bring her by for a drop off. I waited about 30 minutes for them to see my dog, then I GOT ALL THE PERSONAL CARE YOU WOULD NORMALLY GET IN AN APPOINTMENT. I got all my questions answered, my dog got everything she needed, and it was all reasonably cheap. Everyone was extremely nice, helpful, AND caring! I paid $195, and that included the exam fee ($15), an xray ($45), a cast and pain meds ($125), and also flea meds for my cat ($10). I was so releived, and extremely thankful. I've never been so happy. The only bad thing was the clinic was small, and the building was old, but also clean.
- Pros: Great prices, great staff, great care, actually treated me like a person!
- Cons: The building was old and strange, but also clean with all the machines necessary.
Great place for your pets!

I acquired my first dog (ever!) early this year. This clinic has made it so easy on my family and I in taking care of our dog and making sure he has his updated shots and vet care. Prices are great and service is wonderful. I drive about 20-25 miles just to bring my dog here. Not a great looking clinic or location, but definitely great prices! With this clinic, there is absolutely no reason to not care properly for your cute little friend. Would recommend to anyone! Not much of a wait if you are there when they open, but as the day progresses, the wait is lesser.
- Pros: Great affordable prices
- Cons: Very limited parking space

Low Cost compared to others.....Must Read

I have been going to low cost for years. Im 25yrs old and have been going for years. The service is fair and Dr. Revere as well as the lady are both excellent in thier field. I was concerned about declawing my cat for he was a lot older and i was advised by friends that he may be to old for the surgery. I had no choice for i was living with a lady who recently remodeled her home. the cat was given to me by my adopted grandma and i promised to never get rid of the cat. The cat is over 10yrs old and the surgery couldnt of been better. i thought the cat would be traumatic due to its age but he did just fine. Dr. Revere has even worked on my Yorkies. Sometimes you pay for your surroundings and if you like nice new surroundings maybe you should look elsewhere but if you are like me and so many others you sometimes cant afford surgery on a cat or dog even though u love them. not to mention shots. low cost makes it affordable and without them i would have had to postpone or forget the care of my animals. These folks are great with all kinds of pets. large and small. due to thier geographical location i have noticed a lot of pit bulls and boxers. I lived in pasadena for 22 years and would drive to lowcost pet clinic. I like the staff and will always go there regardless of my income. good luck to all and it never hurts to give them a call.
- Pros: having access to quality care for loved ones
- Cons: sometimes you have to arrive early and waiting is not uncommon unless u have an emergency
