We went to Marfreless after a show on Saturday night. I was a bit worried that the place would be dead since there hadn't been too many reviews in 2008. It was just right! The place was full but not crowded - it seemed like there was always just one or two spots available. The downstairs consists of the bar and seems like a typical if unremarkable bar. The upstairs is a loft filled with leather couches. And couples. Kissing. We had a lot of fun - we weren't sure what to expect but it was exactly as people described. There were some couples just sitting and talking and some giving little kisses now and then. There were a few couples that were making out pretty thoroughly and were definitely copping a feel now and then! The service was pretty attentive and the martinis were tasty. We ordered some edamame and it was still very cold - some pieces frozen. But we really didn't come for the food - HA! My date and I have been together for 2 years and it was fun to do something a little different romantically. If you are a bit of a voyeur or have a touch of the exhibitionist this is a PG-13 way to get your heart pumping. We did see a few couples that looked uncomfortable - these mainly looked like first dates where the guy was hoping for some action and the girl was NOT INTERESTED. So take someone who wants to kiss you. LOL.
Pros: good martinis, a hot date spot
Cons: don't eat the food

I recently went here with my boyfriend for the first time and I really enjoyed it. It's a great place for some one-on-one time with your boyfriend/girlfriend. But, I do agree with the others...let's not tell too many people about this place!! It's a great secret and it wasn't over crowded or have really young people in there (which is really nice). I didn't think i'd be one to start making out with my boyfriend, but it just kinda happens without thought!! :) And, before I knew it we were doing what everyone else was doing....making out!! It was a lot of fun and I'm sure we will be going back in the future!!
Pros: Nice, secret location, drinks, privacy, atmosphere!!!

I went there twice and it was years ago. It sounds like they got newer furniture, but it still doesn't sound good. I didn't especially care to sit on the ugly used sofas I could see (and smell) in the lighted rooms, much less go into the dark rooms. And why any grown up would want to make out here with all those other people, I really don't get. The only reason I can think of is everyone there must be cheating on someone so they can't go home and do it.

As the self-proclaimed "hideaway for amorous couples" Fionna and I were excited to check out Marfreless. Granted, it was a Wednesday night - but the place was about empty. I've seen more action in my swamp after having waffles with Donkey on a Sunday morning! No problem, though. We didn't go for a crowd or any paticular action anyway; we wanted some alone-time, and got it! Spent the evening upstairs on one of the many couches. For what it's worth, the place smelled a little musty - but I got over it. My game of "tonsil broomball" with Fionna kept my mind where it should be, on her! Thanks to a misdirected light above, Fionna stood on couch above me to adjust and I got to know her a little better! Anyway - it's an ok place (for a couple of ogre's in-lust), but I'm not sure I'd bring Snowwhite there...

I would have to say I completely agree with paunch17...he took the words right out of my mouth..... make sure if you do come and forget where your at...please be sure to open the menu and read the first page...."ATTENTION"...it will get you right on together.
Pros: it's not highly advertised which is good for obvious reasons.
Cons: same as paunch17

Please lets not ruin this bar. Marfreless is Marvulous! The atmosphere is great! It's defintiely a bar you want to keep low key to keep the high end people. It's cozy and classy. I made the mistake of taking some people there and was so embarassed. This is not Bakers or Sams Boat! I go there to get away from people like that. But I really do enjoy this bar. So please people don't ruin it. Go where you know, NOT where you think you could be a part of the" marvulous marfreless crowd!"
Pros: GREat service and drinks!
Cons: "Katrinas" ruining it for us

Perfection at its finest. Great 'secret' location. Great music. Great scene. Perfect. There's not much more to say about it.

A Houston legend - the unmarked door behind the River Oaks 3 leads to this "secret," dimly lit bar where old friends hang downstairs to chat and couples head upstairs for, er, more intimate chat.
Pros: quiet, comfortable and casual place to "nightcap"
Cons: bar is just so-so, as is the music and decor. Just don't turn up the lights and everything's fine.

I visited Marfreeless yesterday for the first time. It was a feat finding the entrance. It's across from Sherlocks, but the entrance is a door directly beneath a staircase (of all places). The color of the door has since changed to blue. After you open the door, watch your step. There's a dip immediately after the threshold. The ambiance was nice, I scanned the room and the soft glow of flickering candles over table tops was beautiful. For a bit of privacy, we went to the second floor. Watch your head as you walk up the stairs. The sight on the second floor was nice as well. I loved the brown contemporary leather sofas; it went well with the color of the wall. Had the couches been of different colors you would have thought you walked into the "Living Room" section of a furniture store. Ha ha! I am kidding, but there were lots of couches. The place was empty Thursday night around 8pm, so we snuggled away. Our waiter eventually came, but after she came, she checked on us frequently. I would have preferred less checks ups. Ha ha ha. They do have an extensive list of wines, vodkas, rums, beers, and the like. They only offer snacks that would exasperate thirst, so don't count on getting a bite to eat. As we left, four other couples had arrived and were in make out heaven. It was a sight to see. Ha ha ha My boyfriend and I loved Marfreless, we can't wait to go back again.
Pros: Interior Design, Ambiance
Cons: Location

a 2 tiered establishment literally hiding on a side of a building with only a red door to hint that this may be the place you're looking for. inside you are greeted with a surprisingly crowded space, with couches filling every upstairs corner, hence, the "make out room". i have never seen so many couches ... with so many people making out on them ... and sad to say, i was one of them. but nevertheless, if you're looking for a place that is laid-back with a good social scene ... chill, hangout, and make out ... good luck trying to find this place first~!*
Pros: make out place
Cons: hard to find!
