Best barbecue in Houston

This restaurant was one of the best barbecue places I've ever been to. I had the sliced beef and it was so tender i could cut it with a spoon. The barbecue sauce was also extremely good and homemade too you could tell. I then had dessert and it was outstanding i had coconut cream pie which was the best that i have ever had. I strongly recommend this restaurant. The only thing i didn't like was they aren't onpen on mondays! The neighbor hood that it's in isn't the best. I would suggest going during daylight or with other people if you go at night.

• Pros: food is delicious, service is great, parking lot has plenty of room most of the time, oldstyle from when it opened in the 1940's
• Cons: It can be hard to find, the neighborhood isn't that good.

Worth the drive from Baytown

The best fried shrimp in Houston! They remind me of my grandmothers. My wife introduced me to the place when we were dating and we stop there anytime we're in the area. Even if we're not, it's well worth the drive from Baytown!

In fact, as a research project for this review, I'll have to go there for lunch today...you know...for research.

• Pros: Haven't had a bad meal yet.
• Cons: Sometimes they run out of Coconut Pie (Order it first)

Great food, Great real place.

I will make this short. The salad is a bowl of cold crisp real lettuce, not some weird stuff. The chicken fried steak which is what i normally get is fantastic, the white cream gravy has a hint of sweet to it. The fries are crispy and fresh. I BBQ is good but i have only gotten it a few time and normally we will just get some ribs for an app for the table. The fried chicken is always great but you will have to wait since they bread it and fry it to order, but how else would you really want them to do it. Most of the staff have been there for many years and will be there for long to come. Friday night expect a line to be out the door, but just take a number, it will be worth it.

• Cons: none, because i like this place just the way it is...

Best Barbecue Chicken Ever.

This place is absolutely fabulous. I have been going there since I was first able to eat solid food, of course, when I was little I called it the 'old folks home.' Yes, a lot of the patrons are up in their years. The food is amazing. By far the best barbecued chicken (so tender and flavorful), the best fried shrimp, and the best french fries in town. The atmosphere is amazing as well. Some of the waitresses have been there since I was little and have the greatest attitudes- they are sweet and hilarious. We walk in and everyone knows us and knows what we want to eat. I highly recommend this place. We live in The Woodlands and travel to The Barbecue Inn at least once a week for a great meal. You will not be disappointed. Make sure to nibble on the amazing warm white bread they bring to the table and always finish w/ a slice of pie. A true Houston landmark.

Field of Dreams: A restaurant that takes you back in time...

Over the years, I have seen this restaurant, but never stopped in. I think it was the name that stopped me. Saturday, I was hungry for fried shrimp and "Googled" and found this place. I live in Spring, and the weather was suppose to be stormy, but I decided to drive in to Crosstimbers to the Garden Oaks area and find this place. I was pleasantly surprised. I arrived right at 11:30 on Saturday, and there were only about 10 tables of customers. I noticed they were all eating fried foods: chicken, chicken fried steak, chicken fried chicken and SHRIMP! They have 2 front dining rooms with booths and the back 3rd dining room with tables (square and round). At the very front they also have a counter with maybe 15 stools. The waitress came up almost immediately, and I ordered ice tea and added with lemon. She brought it out and also brought a small bowl with 3 large slices of lemon (plus the one in the glass). She said, just in case! She asked if I was ready to order and I told her I heard the shrimp were good....and she said, they are the BEST! I ordered the Fried shrimp, with a baked potato and it also came with a lettuce and tomato (lot of tomato) salad. There was a basket of assorted crackers/melba toast and a bowl of butter packets (just like the old days). The salad came out and it looked like the thousand island dressing was homemade...it was good. Then my dinner came out with these beautiful butterflied shrimp, so nice and crisp, like homemade onion rings or something! It was everything I had hoped for and more. They also bring out the lazy susan with cheese, green onions/chives, and sour cream (no bacon) and you stuff your potato yourself. I still had salad left, so I added cheese and green onion to my salad. There was a thick slice of bread also in a basket. I noticed that no one got barbeque except one table, and people at that table also ordered shrimp and stuff crabs. This is a really good seafood place and I will be back probably every week! Enjoy!

• Pros: Great food, baby boomers will enjoy the old fashioness of it!
• Cons: Not open on Sundays or Mondays....

Rare find! BEST Fried Shrimp and bbq Chicken in The World!

This is our neighborhood comfort food mecca. The restaurant is an old fashioned southern diner and the food is fresh and the best. We ordered whole barbeque chickens for a house party and everyone raved about the tenderness and flavor. My usual is the fried shrimp dinner with coleslaw and a baked potato. We often order to go because the place gets packed!

• Cons: no corn on the cob

This place has been on the same corner for 60 years the current building is the secound and has been remodeled several times. It has a 60's decor and pictures of the original place around the walls with etched glass dividers of Texas, Houston and the oil patch. very comfortable dinning for busniess lunches or family dinning. FOOD! It dosent get any better than this place ,fried seafood oysters shrimp, fish, stuffed crab, and the chicken is fried fresh (about 15min. wait time on chicken but worth it). Chicken fried steak keeps your elbows bending and your face smilling, and, don't forget the Barbque, the most tender brisket and leanest ribs you'll ever come across). Top this off with service from pros who cater to the customer. Don't be supprised by being called hon or sweetie. Best darn dessert and homemade pie in Texas. You eat here once and you will return. Family owned and operated since 1946.

Best Chicken Fried Steak in the world, and I would know.

I love this place. I have been dining here with my parents since I was like 2. The theme is retro as every one puts it (The same theme since I was 2, never changed) but the food more than makes up for any aesthetic quality you may find unappealing.

They have the most outstanding Chicken fried steak I have ever tasted, Great fried shrimp and stuffed crab. Their Barbecue chicken is out of this world and their Filet and Ribeyes are fork tender. This is a weekly staple for my family and I.

Service, couldn't find any better. Attentive, friendly and accurate. It has been my experience that if 'bad service' was obtained it was because of the poor attitue of the diner receiving it. These ladies are the most professional in the business!!!!

• Pros: Fried chicken and chicken fried steak that melts in your mouth!!!!!!!

Why the high ratings?

This place certainly has nothing good going for it. My mom rants and raves about the fried chicken, but I dont like anything here. Maybe their desserts are good but it feels like sitting in the 1960s. They used to have this wall paper that had a forest type setting on it, they might still have it. I always tried to take a happy meal in here when I was little because the food is that bad. I just don't like this place. And the uncanny thing is, they make loads of business. Theyre NEVER not busy.
