Quick Service, Yummy Food

by Lyndongolden at Citysearch

I particularly enjoyed the chicken fried steak...tender inside with a "just right" batter crunch. And wow...the food was prepared quickly.

Great food, great variety and FAST service

by cooltouch at Citysearch

I've been to Jax many times, and plan to visit it many times more in the future. Jax is a place that does it right. I spent a lot of years in the restaurant biz, doing everything from busing tables to managing a chain of pizza restaurants. And one thing I realized many years ago was that one of the critical keys to a successful restaurant operation revolves around a threefold theme: serve good food, plenty of it, and sell it for a reasonable price. Jax aces all three of these items. Another important key is to have a competent staff, especially in the kitchen. Jax knocks this one out of the park. Their cooks are FAST, but they have always cooked my food perfectly, and gotten my orders right. The fajitas, burgers, chicken fried steak, shrimp basket, macho nachos, and salads are all outstanding. They have a special menu that always has a variety of interesting choices. Try the blackened catfish. It isn't on the menu, but they'll prepare it for you if you ask for it. It surpasses Pappadeaux's BC in flavor, is a larger portion, and costs less than half as much. After you place your order at the register, you'll barely have time to get your drink and silverware and find a place to sit before your order's ready. Did I mention they're FAST? It's because of this that they are so busy at lunch. Folks know they can get in and out quickly. Yes, the place can get noisy, especially at lunch with the blaring PA, and when the Zydeco music starts on Friday and Saturday nights. The patio is quieter, but can be less than comfortable during the Houston summer. Full bar and ice cold beer, serve yourself iced tea and soft drinks. Lots of parking, but the lot is almost always full by noon. If you get there at 11am or after 1pm, it'll be a lot easier to find a place to park, and after 1pm, the lady with the microphone isn't quite as busy either. :)

  • Pros: Menu, fast service
  • Cons: Parking can be tight at lunch

Great restaurant Great food GREAT prices!

by jcr76 at Citysearch

I'm a regular at this place and have had most items on the menu. It's an easy place for lunch and great for dinner. The catfish(both grilled and fried) are heaven on earth! The burgers are juicey and I love sweet potato fries anywhere. I could live off this place.

  • Pros: fast and inexpensive
  • Cons: can't think of any

Zydeco and Cajun food in an open-air setting.

by Contributor at Citysearch

The Scene
The restaurant is fairly spacious, with a huge outdoor patio and an expansive indoor section with a dance floor. Cajun food is the specialty of the house. Aside from serving food and spirits, Jax doubles as one of the city's top zydeco haunts. A rotating lineup of local acts (Wilfred Chevis, Step Rideau) and regional stars (Roy Carrier) provides the tunes. The dance floor is usually energetic, with folks young and old strutting their stuff.

The Food
You can't go wrong with catfish, crawfish or shrimp (fried or grilled). Burgers are also a main course, and there's a surprisingly solid choice of salads for healthful types. In the center of the restaurant is a circular bar. Prices are reasonable ($2.25 for bottled beer, which is always ice-cold). Cocktails are fairly potent and inexpensive.

Really good food (carb-conscious dieter friendly, to boot!)

by denizzlerath at Citysearch

This is the best place to go if no one knows exactly what they want to eat. Very diverse menu. Haven't come close to trying everything, but what I've had (salads, burgers, grilled chicken/vegs, pecan-crusted salmon patties and their gumbo [mmm!]) have been VERY good. My absolute favorite, however, is their bruchetta shrimp. It's their version of what most restaurants call Shrimp Diablo. Instead of just bacon/jalapeno wrapped shrimp, they have an oyster in theirs, as well. The bacon is also wonderul--thick and hickory smoked. REALLY GOOD! Since I'm on a carb-conscious diet, I simply order extra veggies instead of the pilaf it's normally served over. I certainly don't feel deprived when I order this.

Easy parking, very fast service, great for people watching, lots of talking and laughter. It's a great escape from the confines of a quiet workplace! =)

  • Pros: Quick Service, Easy in/out, LOTS of food choices
  • Cons: None

Passably Good Food Amid Total Bedlam

by ryber at Citysearch

If you are coming here for a business lunch, or dinner with friends, forget it. Not only is this place noisy, but the staff shouts food order numbers over the PA system at the top of their lungs. One staff lady screamed so loud into the microphone, we had to stop talking and wince every few seconds while the echoes died down.

However, if you plan to eat alone or with mute friends, this is a good place to be. I always get the fried catfish, although they put more cornmeal on it than your average Louisiana (Mississippi, Arkansas, Alabama) purveyor, making it kind of crunchy on the outside. This is above-grade roadhouse food, with some dishes not found at the typical roadhouse (e.g., ciabatta sandwiches). However, most roadhouses are quieter than this. Bring earplugs -- or a baseball bat to KO the screamer lady.

  • Pros: Good Food, Low Prices
  • Cons: Noisy, Noisy, Crowded (usually)

Great Place

by chuckies at Citysearch

I've actually never tried the hamburgers here, but everyone that I've been with says they're great. Their crispy fried chicken salads are the best. Also try the fried catfish and they always have very good daily specials. Food is great, service is great and at a very easy, going atmosphere. Even though they're really busy at lunch, we never have to wait long for the food. Try it out, you'll sure to come back to Jax.

  • Pros: Great Food, Fast Service
  • Cons: Crowded

Tite c'est bon cher'!

by datcajun at Citysearch

Maybe the folks running this place aren't Cajun or Creole, because with the exception of the fried shrimp basket, there are not Cajun or Creole food items here. Good food though, but that's not what'll bring me back. Met my true love there and had a great time.

Was like a taste of home (Broussard,LA) dancing and visiting with just good old fashioned home folk. Adults, seniors, kids and babies,...definitely reminded me of dem fais do do and festivals I grew up attending down in Acadiana. Will definitely be back for the dancing and cheap beer, and recommend it to anyone who likes to dance or listen to Zydeco music. Laissez le bon temps roulez et la chaches pas la patate!

  • Pros: Music, People, Cheap Beer
  • Cons: Not Cajun Food, Not Creole Food, Where da boudain at?
