When I called to make a reservation at this B&B, I was impressed by Robin's warmth and friendliness. We found more of the same during our stay. Although the outside of this B&B looks a little run-down, the rooms are adorable and cozy. We stayed in Cindy's room, which has a 2-person jacuzzi. The website said the room comes with a minifridge and coffee station.... we found neither of these things in our room. And the free wireless internet--we couldn't get it to work. Kind of disappointing. What made up for it, however, was the fact that Robin accommodated our special diet, making us a delicious breakfast that we could actually eat! Overall, it was a good experience.

This may have been just before we repainted our 1898 Victorian, The Big Nest.

The guest doesn't recall our breakfast schedule, which can be confusing, and is articulated on our website as well as our check in information. It's continental before 8 during the week; full breakfast from 8 to 9. On the weekends everything is an hour later, i.e., full 9 - 10 a.m., continental before 9. The coffee is available by 7 a.m. unless it's requested earlier. Otherwise, the coffee "cooks". However, all guests have their own coffee/tea pot. Thanks for the opportunity, Robin.

Run down and dirty but pet-friendly if you're rich

We stayed in "Robert's Retreat" which was very run down and dirty. There was no telephone so we had to use our cell phone to call the front office and tell them that the internet didn't work. The TV was at least 20 years old and the screen was orange-ish. Furniture was garage-sale quality. The chair was covered with a sheet. The beds were old. We found pest excrement in the kitchenette cupboard. There was leftover foodstuffs in the kitchen and even shampoo in the shower (from a previous tenant?). Workers seem to live in the 'rooms' all around and they hang out smoking. The front gates to the property do not actually lock and the room did not seem secure either. While the neighborhood seems to be gentrifying, it is not a place that I would walk at night. Breakfast in the main house was meager and cheap: scrambled eggs, Wonderbread toast (1 slice), melon, and 1 slice of bacon.

The upside: They let us bring our dog. It cost $60.

Our one-night stay cost nearly $300. You can stay at a really nice hotel in Houston for that much.

Hmmmm. The TV Is one year old. The furniture is antique and not easily replicated. The Recliner has a designer fabric throw. One of the beds is a 100 year old scrolled, solid iron, rare, 3/4 bed, for which we paid $3500 five years ago. The second bed has different inlaid woods with intricate carving on its headboard. Both mattresses are new. We have regular bug maintenance. We're on the Gulf Coast; unless we use toxins that linger in the air and remain on all surfaces, we'll have the occasional bug. The "left over shampoo" is fresh shampoo we provide our guests. We have a head housekeeper and two people who assist her. The rooms are not unkempt. This person knew the cost of the room and her pets before she checked in. Thank you for this opportunity to respond. She did not get in touch with us to express her dissatisfaction. The Scene
A restored 1898 Victorian home in the older Houston neighborhood of Montrose, this tall, thin, two-story home resides amid a population of similar homes built around the same time. The mature vegetation, including several oaks, challenges this towering structure when it comes to height, and a wraparound porch offers the perfect location for lazing away an afternoon, watching the world go by.

The Details
Pine floors throughout the house speak of a different time, when quality was king and artificial flooring had not yet come into vogue. Custom-sewn fabrics adorn the walls and furniture. Large rooms come with private baths, antique furnishings and top-notch beds frosted with pillow-top feather mattresses. But B&B charm doesn't mean sacrificing convenience, and you'll also find small refrigerators, cable TV, clock radios, telephones and data ports. Enjoy a cup of coffee or tea from the beverage station right outside your door, and schedule enough time to really take advantage of the breakfast served here--breads, pancakes, frittatas, crêpes and omelets are all made from scratch, the fruit is bought at the local farmer's market and the herbs are grown by the back door to the kitchen.
