Great neighborhood bar
by shearer09
Great steak nights on Tuesday, Fried or blackend catfish for lunch on Fridays. They have a really good liquor selection, even several top shelf bottles. The Weekend bartenders are alot of fun. with the weather getting warmer it nice that they have two large patios to hang out on.
Also, the website has been changed from Griffshouston dot com to Griffshouston dot net
- Pros: Good Prices, Nice Bartenders
- Cons: bartenders take too many smoke breaks
Best dive bar in town!!
by foodiefann
"GRIFF'S!! GRIFF'S!! GRIFF'S!!" By the end of the night, my friends and I were chanting it. Been there twice during the summer, food is cheap and great. Wings, phillies, fries and rings all have my vote, especially with the gift certificate coupons you can find at a site that rhymes with westaurant dot com. Actually, the staff recognized us on our 2nd visit, and they were having pizza for some regulars and offered us some.
My brother went there for trivia recently and came in second place. Apparently he got owned by some law professors. Awesome; any place that can offer up folk who can take down my genius of a brother is deserving of a lot of love.
Good corn hole; can't wait to try it out for horns away games next football season and for this bloody mary bar that this site speaks of.
- Pros: Sweet collection of beer cans and old dusty sports flags
- Cons: None, unless you consider beers served in plastic cups a con
Great sports bar!
by rulu
Griff's is a great sports bar in the heart of Houston that has lots of history. I have watched the Rockets two championships here and have gone along in a group bus to many Astros and Texans games. The people that come here are a great bunch, from old timers to college kids. I love the dive feel of it as opposed to generic looking bars.
- Pros: Ambiance, beer, St. Patricks
- Cons: None
A really fun place
by tjelias
Griff's is a great neighborhood bar (even if you have to drive 30 minutes to get to the neighborhood, as I do). The staff is great and the food can't be beat. The Tuesday steak night is awesome. They have the best St. Patrick's week festivities around. e.g., golf tournament, Irish queen contest, parade, live music, Irish stew cook-off etc... There are enough TV sets to see all the sporting events at the same time (or at least the ones you are interested in at the time). They have even been known to have pudding wrestling on occasion.
- Pros: Full bar, great food, awesome ambience
- Cons: I hate to leave to go home
A Home Away From Home
by Actium
I have been coming here almost as long as I've lived in Houston. Among the regulars I have made great friends who are like a family to me. This is the sort of place that will always give you a good time while you are there, and leave you with a memory to cherish. More than a bar, it is a second home.
- Pros: Great drinks, Sublime service, transcendant drinks, truly unique ambience
- Cons: None
Best Bar in Houston
by JamesCollins
Not only is Griff's the oldest sports bar in Houston (40+ yrs and counting), it's also the best.
They have lots of TVs for every sport and every team. They watch the Rockets, Texans and Astros. Saturday and Sundays are a must for football fans. They have all the college games and all the pros. Just pick a TV.
They also have a delicious menu and a great beer selection. They have weekly specials on drinks and food. Tuesday night is steak night! My favorite is the Griff's original hamburger and a Shiner Bock. Good times!
They have pool tables, an eclectic jukebox, and a patio for those nice days. All in all, a really good place to hang out and have some fun.
And don't forget about St. Patrick's Day. They have the largest festival in Houston.
- Pros: Cheap Beer, Good Food, Sports
- Cons: None
where everybody knows your name ...
by lekbar
i've been coming here for a year now and think it's a warm bar with lots of friends who enjoy each others company ... the owners buy lots of shots for everyone and the bartenders are fast and friendly ... and the wings are addictive ... everyone's passionate about their sports teams without being arrogant or cocky ... there are fans of lots of different teams, especially college teams, so if you're an arrogant azz about things and can't handle your alcohol, you will be called out for it, which keeps it REAL ... all in all, the quintessential neighborhood bar ...
A true neighborhood bar
by UncleDrayton
Griff's is a true neighborhood bar, the type of place that brings an entire community together. Wander inside and you'll see tatooed hipsters chatting amicably with lawyers in suits, college kids sharing a drink and a story with senior citizens, and everyone cheering like hell for the Astros, Texans or Rockets. It's comfortable, authentic. It's the type of place where everybody is welcomed and has a chance to be a regular if they just show up again.
The bar food is pretty good, especially the cheeseburger which is fantastic in the greasy-spoon sort of way that demands two hands, your full attention, and roll of paper towels in arm's reach. On Tuesday nights they offer a ribeye, baked potato with all the fixings, and a cold bud for $11.
It's a great place to watch sports, have a few drinks, and feel like you're part of tight community in the midst of a big city.
- Pros: Beer, sports, shots, burgers
Not as welcoming as you might think. BE CAREFUL
by robynMu
This is, at first blush, a GREAT neighborhood bar if you live in the Montrose area. Very unpretentious, decent food, a place to root for your favorite team. And the people seem very nice - at least that's what we thought at first. However, there's a reason it's not very crowded. Be VERY CAREFUL which team you're rooting for, as there can be some distinctly unsportsmanlike behavior. We all have off days, but... there's nothing worse than a cranky "dry drunk" who isn't rooting for the same team you are - especially if you're not part of Griff's "in" crowd. Yikes. Be careful here. You may not be as welcome as you at first think, so don't let down your guard! On the plus side, if the management DOES like you, it may take years, but you will have their undying loyalty, no matter what your behavior is! So they can be true friends, it's just that it's a very selective club-- especially for a Montrose "living-under-the-bridge" bar.
Never go to this bar!
by brookiegator
Make sure you are a fan of the teams of the owners and friends because NO ONE at this establishment has a sense of humor. I came to visit Houston for 2 weeks LOVING this bar until one bad experience where I will never come back. I come from a football loving town where most normal people enjoy the game and sport and also can have a sense of humor, including the opposing team. This is not the case here. I love the bartenders but besides that the negative presence of such unfriendly owners (and friends) made this bar a never again. I love me some dive bars, but this one is a dump. By the way Vern, Go Gators!!!!
- Pros: The owners and friends attitudes
- Cons: Good bar food and great bartenders
