Poor Quality Food
by Lola24 at Citysearch
The location is this fabulous, little cozy place.{Although, the decorations inside were a bit cheap & tacky looking} The waiter was very sweet and nice. I ordered the grilled chicken sandwich, fries and a lemonade. The grilled chicken was BURNT, and tasted like dirty dishwater. The fries were the frozen seasoned fries you can buy at Wal-Mart. Oh, the lemonade is simply the icing on the cake. I asked "do you have lemonade?" He responded back with "let me go check and see, I don't think we do." Well, he brought me back the lemonade and said "Someone made some yesterday, so I found you some, and you only get 1 refill with the lemonade." The lemonade was $3.25!!! I will NEVER go to this place again. I figure the next time I want to waste $15, I would do better to flush it down the toilet!
- Pros: Charming location, great customer service
- Cons: BAD Food
Fresh, healthy food.

The service was good and they have a small patio out front that is good for nice days. The menu has a lot of variety for vegetarians and/or health conscious eaters. The guacamole and chips appetizer was a good start. The guacamole was above average, the chips and salsa were fresh too.
The rotisserie chicken was fantastic! It came with mashed potatoes and fresh vegetables. The gumbo was very good too if you're okay with beans. It has a more authentic taste to it so start off with a cup if you're unsure. I hear most everything on the menu is good and the Sunday brunch is a must have. Definitely plan on coming back.
- Pros: price, service, food, variety of foods to try, ambience (indoor patio)
- Cons: none. far, if you don't live around montrose area.
Still great after all of these years!

I grew up in the area and returned for a visit recently. My sister and I went back to Baba Yega's - it's easily been 15 or 20 years! It is still my favorite restaurant in town! I had the Portabella Sandwich..Yum! But everything that I have had there has been wonderful!
AWESOME FOOD!!!

The food is fantastic, the price is right, and atmosphere is unique and fun. It has a montrose feel to it, and the service is great! I've been for sunday brunch, a business lunch, and a romantic dinner, and all have been fantastic. The value is right on, and my personal favorite is Pasta night on Tuesdays. It is worth every penny, especailly if you have some hungry boys! It is great! I have been going there for the past year and a half, and will keep going!
- Pros: Food, service, price, uniqueness, and service
- Cons: None
Great place for parties & meetings!

Our company has been coming to Baba Yega's for years for gatherings such as Christmas parties & annual meetings. We always recieve great food & service. The buffets are always plentiful & delicious. Jane & her crew are always so welcoming & helpful. We have also purchased appetizers & bite size desserts for open houses. Those trays are always pretty, fresh, & delectable.
Always Great!!

I have been a patron of Baba Yega for almost thirty years. Since I have moved out of the Montrose area,I don't eat there as often as i would like. However, after eating there this past weekend, I commented to a friend that the amazing thing is that the food has remained, delicious, plentiful, and relatively inexpensive. (Hats off to management and staff!) I had the Chicken Basil Pasta Salad which was great with plenty of chicken and more than I could eat. The service was, as usual, quick and cheerful. I also enjoy the Vegetarian Meatloaf for which I would like to have the recipe. Whenever I'm in the Montrose area I usually dine at Baba Yega.
one-of-a-kind neighborhood gem

The last reviewer sounds just as "toxic" as the alleged fish her friend was served. I have been going to Baba Yega practically since it opened in the 70's. The staff is always friendly and fun. It's a great place to take people b/c the menu is so eclectic - awesome burgers, good, fresh vegetarian food and wonderful entrees that can compete with any restaurant in the neighborhood. The wilted spinach salad with grilled salmon is the best salad I've ever had in Houston. I also recommend the chicken caesar or the veggie club - even if you're not vegetarian - it's amazing. When other restaurants are becoming more the same as the world becomes more Corporate, Baba Yega is a one-of-a-kind neighborhood gem.
Avoid the "Special" - It's probably Toxic!

We visited this establishment before and wanted to share it with our family for a celebration. The service was wonderful and the wait staff gracious. We are a food service family for over 20 years. Seafood was our specialty and the standards were very high for food safety. After beginning our meal with appetizers all was well....then the main course arrived. Within minutes of ingesting the "Special ".....one family member was so sick that we had to leave the resataurant. It of course ruined the evening and the money lost was a mere irritant compared to the lack of professionalism shown by the management and owner. After a call back to the establishment we were told the fish was removed from the line. The owner denies that but it was said by the manager on duty. The family member is fine now ...but after having over 10 hours of severe cramping , pounding headache, and weakness in her muscles..... not even able to stand..........I cannot imagine a worse way to celebrate!! So...we had possible scromboid poisioning from a piece of fish that was bad and called a "Special"............I will not suggest this restaurant to anyone ever again...but I will warn everyone I can to save their money and go to a Safe restaurant to eat. The owners lack of caring and blatent rudeness towards us is inexcusable and he should be ashamed and embarrassed at the entire incident.
Bad food.

I have loved Baba yaga for a long time. However, several months ago I had three meals in a row that were horrible. I don't know what has happened to their food preparation. It used to be pretty good. My last three experinces were overcooked tune steak, fish cooked in grease that was very old, and roasted chicken that was so over cooked it was black. I really regret it, because I have always liked going there. however after three bad experiences, I don't any more. This is not just my opinion, but is the opinion of everyone I have talked to about the matter. I write with the hope they will change and be the resturant I really liked/
Scrumptious meals - comfortable atmosphere

All 4 of us are pescetarians, and we loved the food that we ordered. The brie appetizer with fresh roasted garlic is to die for. I LOVED my club sandwich (with "smoked turkey style gluten & fakin' bacon"), and the faux meatloaf was pretty good too. We were seated promptly, and the service was awesome!
- Pros: food, price, portions, vegetarian
- Cons: none
