In light of Houston's nightlife evolution into cover-band joints, this dive bar remains a blues stronghold.

Etta's has no real lighting and no sign outside, but this modest venue is the only place in town to see blues-and-soul saxman Grady Gaines on a Sunday night, joined by his band the Texas Upsetters. The club's layout includes a cafe up front and big basement-style room in the back. On the crowded dance floor, the nicely dressed, older African-American clientele mingles with a more casually dressed college-age crowd.
