not so hot

Could be so much more, but instead seems to fall into being typical high art which is more focused on the politics of the art seen then with beauty or artistic value. As a result Lawndale shows a lot of bad art. But is worth going to if you are in the neighborhood because occasionally good work does sneak in.
- Pros: nice space
- Cons: under-whelming work
An upscale gallery with a contemporary artistic sensibility and a commitment to local artists.

The Scene
Many art spaces in town are somewhat seedy--and lack air-conditioning-but Lawndale's classy facility in the Museum District provides a comfortable environment for visitors to enjoy exhibits. The art deco building, designed by Houston architect Joseph Finger, opened to the public in 1930. In 1993, Lawndale moved in, establishing four galleries for viewing.
The Art
Lawndale is the only gallery in Houston dedicated to local work and whose board is one-third artists. The center hosts distinctive annual parties and galas, including Cinco de Mayo and Dia de los Muertos celebrations, the Hair Ball and the Big Show, an exhibition open to artists who live within a 100-mile radius of Houston. In an area where artistic stuffiness reigns supreme, it's this institution's mission to thumb its nose at convention, wear its underwear on its head and let it all hang out--all in the name of good art.
Great space!

The Lawndale Art Center is a great way to get out of the heat and see some great, local artists. It's free, it's always changing. . . why would you NOT want to go?
Plus, check out the "Big Show" which opens this weekend!
