Poor service, Excellent food
by crystalle
My boyfriend and I dined here to celebrate Valentine's Day because of the recent article on MSN: "Top 10 Most Romantic restaurants in the U.S.". We were disappointed to find that we were being sat at a closed- in porch with a window unit air conditioner hanging from the doorway.
The server was far from offering "fine dining" experiences for us. He was simply an order taker who had no interest in making our evening memorable. The server assistants were more attentive to us than our waiter.
The restaurant was very quiet, which made conversation awkward.
The only saving grace was that the food was excellent! Lobster Bisque was top notch!
The experience certainly was not worth the $150 we paid for the two of us to dine.
- Pros: Excellent food
- Cons: Poor service and lack of ambience
Merely ordinary

My husband and I went to this restaurant to celebrate Valentine's Day. The waiter was impatient and rude. He behaved as if we were the ones to thank him for being at the restaurant. Unfortunately, the atmosphere did not change throughout the evening, the service continued inattentive and the food came cold. We were disappointed that a restaurant of that reputation was unable to deliver a good ambiance, and plates that were presented, and tasted, merely ordinary.

Whenever I am to be in the Montrose area I always get a reservation here. Excellent food, great service and a beautiful dining room.

Unparalleled Houston French Cuisine
by htown04
I agree with the previous reviewers, this place is fantastic.
I went on a Tuesday night and it was almost empty, so maybe that has something to do with it, bu I was thoroughly thrilled.
The place, the menu, the wine list, the service, and the dessert were all terrific.
The only thing I'd change was the escargot. It wasn't great and didn't match all the other wonderful things this place has to offer.
Try it.
- Pros: location, hotel attached is magnificent, food, wine, service, staff, ...
wonderful surroundings

excellent food and beautiful ambience. when they offer the chateau briand be sure to try it. the salon is also an incredible place to host a party. staff is very helpful and courteous.
The six rooms of this elegant Old-World hotel are as sumptuous as the French cuisine served in its acclaimed restaurant.

Every inch of La Colombe d'Or evokes an air of royalty, from plush southern French furnishings and dining room to the walnut-paneled bar and library. This European-style establishment, built in 1923 by Humble Oil founder W.W. Fondren, has become a benchmark for luxury and sophistication. Each individually appointed suite has a king-size bed and private dining room, while the 2,000-square-foot penthouse also has a private dressing area and whirlpool.

My girlfriends and I celebrated my birthday at this place and were surprised at how great everything was. The way they greeted us at the door, to the table setting, the champagne, b-day cake, food! it was wonderful.
- Pros: on-line reservation, beautiful art work, make your own party
- Cons: too quiet, lousy background musi
Spectacular French cuisine in an elegant setting.

One of Houston's most romantic dining destinations, La Colombe d'Or's impeccable service and modern French cuisine are worth every dollar. Begin with tantalizing escargot or lobster bisque with fresh Louisiana crabmeat. Advance to chateaubriand for two or a heavenly port-wine tenderloin--meat dishes are the house specialty. Sample seared tuna, grilled salmon or unique seafood pasta dishes. Desserts are incredible, with the frozen nougat glace and bananas Foster headlining.
