Upscale, family-friendly Japanese restaurant for hibachi, fresh sushi options and a commendable wine menu.
by Contributor at Citysearch
In Short
Atmospheric music and a soothing color palette provide a welcoming environs and a departure from the trendy sushi scene. Mixes of neighborhood regulars and lunchers have their choice of tables in the main dining room or at the sushi bar. In a separate room, the bustling hibachi grill is an ideal spot for large groups or diners with kids in tow. Expect a contemporary Japanese menu with sushi, sashimi, noodles and grilled seafood specialties. Extensive wine list.

Other than the far drive...i have no complaints to eating at Sakana. The service was great! You get greeted instantly when you arrive. Their specialty rolls are one of a kind. I'm in love with their fried ice cream too. If you love desserts, make sure you order one! The unagi is also a great selection if you dont particularly like sushi. I recommend almost everything!
- Pros: The atmosphere and friendly staff

The service staffs are wonderful. They are super friendly and take good care of the customers. The chirashi and the fry tofu are the best in town. But also need to mention the restroom, it is so clean, and neat.
- Pros: food, cleanness

Sakana is one of the best sushi houses in Houston. Always fresh. Always friendly. I drive past many other sushi restaurants to get to Sakana...it's that good. The staff is always friendly and helpful. Nice selection of cold sake. Good prices.
- Pros: Fresh sushi., Friendly., Cold sake.
- Cons: none
NOT RECOMMENDED, SAVE YOUR MONEY!

My wife and I went there. Although the atmosphere was not bad, but I can't say the same about the food. There was not a variety of sushi or rolls, it was very typical. The sashimi was standard, nothing special. We were not impressed. For the high price, we would not go back. The place was empty, and I think it will not last. We've been to better japanese restaurants.
- Pros: None
- Cons: Variety sushi rolls, Price, Quality
BEST SUSHI IN HOUSTON

This restaurant is FANTASTIC! The service is excellent and the waitstaff and managers are polite and friendly. There is a large assortment of specialty rolls and there are some great spicy dishes! My husband and I tried many rolls and loved each and every one. The prices are a bit high, but well worth it. Check this place out....I know you will love it!
- Pros: Friendly Waitstaff, Excellent Food, Great Ambiance
Great Date Restaurant

Great atmosphere and decor. The service is excellent. Drinks stayed full the whole time. They even brought my wife a new tea when her's was 1/4 full. Great service. Sashimi was top notch. My wife thought it was some of the best tuna she'd had at a sushi restaurant. Out of all the rolls, I preferred the Spider Roll. Since it contains crab legs which are cooked it was more salty than other selections. Might be why I liked it. The philidelphia rolls were also very good. Wife said that they weren't as good as another sushi bar that is downtown, name escapes me at this time. Definite recommend though. Easy access and WONDERFUL service/atmosphere!
- Pros: Service, Selection
- Cons: None
Not Worth It!!!

We went there last night after reading the rave reviews with a 9.6 grade, and thought we'd try it driving from The Woodlands. BIG MISTAKE!
I've been to better Japanese restaurants in Houston. Selection of sushi rolls NOT impressive, just average. One of their rolls unavailable and no Happy Hour since it was a day after holiday. Happy Hour is ONLY for drinks, NO HAPPY HOUR SUSHI so don't be mislead like we were.
I had the Udon, the tempura was not bad. Again, I've had better because I thought the batter was a bit thick. Worst part - noodles were under cooked, it was difficult to chew and digest.
We also had their sushi. The rice was also hard and difficult to swallow. Smoked salmon sushi was pretty tasty but dry.
In summary, BIG disappointment for long drive. We would not go back or recommend this place to anyone.
- Pros: Atmosphere
- Cons: Under Cooked Noodles , Under Cooked Rice, No Happy Hour

I took my fiance here last night for his bday & we haven't stopped raving about the place since...and he doens't impress easily. Don't be scared away by an empty parking lot. Pu (waitress) was pleasant & attentive throughout the meal. Monica (manager) suggested a few on & off the menu items which were all wonderful; she also checked on us throughout the meal which made us feel very special. The shrimp tempura was amazing and the sushi (mostly sashimi) was phenomenal. The octupus wasn't rubbery at all & I finally learned what salmon roe is supposed to taste like! If you're into rolls (I'm usually not) try the Fantasy roll-one of Monica's off-menu suggestions. Delicious! We ate tons of sushi & drank plenty of alcohol and our tab wasn't even $100. We have both vowed to return to Sakana at least twice a month, if not more often.
- Pros: Fresh sushi, Superior service, Reasonably priced
- Cons: Not one
