HIGHLY RECOMMEND, GREAT MENU SELECTIONS, REASONABLY PRICED
by jeesica
Finally there is a real SPORT BAR in town.
I dropped in during the game, boy! What the exciting place. I began to like this place very much so I brought in a few friends who were sport fanatics and reserved a private booth for just our group. It was the best and exciting day for all of us.
Food, service, and a sport package environment were astounding.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!
- Pros: REASONABLE PRICES, FUN PLACE, FREE PARKING!
- Cons: NONE
Best Bar & Grill in the Houston Minute Maid Park Area
by Astrosfan1234
Home plate is one of the best places to eat in the Downtown area of Houston. I have been here several times for lunch as it is near my workplace. The food I found to be terrific, fresh made and was on time. The food was prepared exactly to my specifications and a super location, just across the street from the ball park. Good lunch specials, nice atmosphere and great place to watch sports - at least 20 TV screens. A great place to go if you're a sports fan. Service is very fast even on the game days. Very comfortable seating and clean. The beer and drinks are served in an efficient fashion. Also the side dishes are great. Most of what I tried was good - the burger, sand witches etc. Also the live music is a wonderful edition. I really enjoy this place and stop in for happy hour at least one or twice a week.
- Pros: Very good service, free parking
EXQUISITE CULINARY EXPERIENCE, COURTEOUS SERVICE, 5 STAR RATING!!
by SENET
It is not just a meal for me; it is my exquisite culinary experience at the BEST sport bar in Houston.
This is my third time eating at Home Plate and I think I owed it to them so I decided to write a review for them. My best friend who regularly eats there recommended that I try Home Plate. I actually tried it. All I can say is WOW. A great dining atmosphere will amaze you, especially people who love sports. A virtual sound system can really put you in the middle of the action and excitement while you enjoy the most delicious meal. Wait staffs are so polite and attentive that you have no worry about your wine glass going emptied. I also recommend you bring your date and take advantage of breathtaking view day or night from the Balcony. This Home Plate is amazing and it is big enough to accommodate whether you are on a date mission, family affair or sport fanatics.
Avoid eating there on game days.

The food at this establishment, is under established. Home Plate needs an overhaul on all of their products. Most of the food that I have expierenced at Home Plate is extremely over cooked, and lacks quality. I would strongly recommend eating before Home Plate, or spending the extra dollar, and eat at the game! If getting through the bland chicken tenders, while painfully sipping on a plastic bottle of miller lite, was not enough, then we had to deal with the miserable service of the untrained, unskilled , and unfriendly waitstaff. And that is on a game day. Overall, I'd recommend Lucky's or Minutemaid Park service over this lousy place!
- Pros: CHEAP BEER
- Cons: ALL ELSE!
Great All-Around Place!
by jthomp1901
I have visited this place several times before for a variety of events at Minute Maid Park, and have always had a great time. Its really nice to have somewhere air -conditioned so close to the ball park, especially during the summer. It's definately a fast and furious rush before and after Astros games, but that is to be expected being one of the only restaurants that close to the stadium. Recently my wife and I reserved their party room for our company outing and I must admit they really bent over backwards to make sure our experience went perfectly. The bartender was friendly and helpfull, and the food was on time and prepared exactly to our specifications. I have read some previous reviews of this place and am a lilttle suspicious of what they were expecting in a sports bar setting, especially on a gameday. I would think it must be pretty hectic and crazy due to the size and timeliness of the crowds from Minute Maid. I just wanted to put my two-cents in, and I definately plan on going back in the future.
- Pros: Parking, Happy Hour, Sports Viewing
- Cons: Hours of Operation
Quite possibly the worst bar in Houston
by htowncoog
I went there after an Astros game tonight ahead of my friends and was looking for a table down stairs and did not find an open one so I went to the second floor where they had open seats and menus on tables. I waited for about 20 minutes and nobody came up so I went downstairs to order at the bar, but there was a sign that said "no food at bar"...so I'm wondering what's going on and ask this waiter (let's call him D because I'm not going to do the manager's job for him by telling him exactly who this is) If I can order food and a drink upstairs...he says something about how on game days they keep up there closed (even though it was half full already), but he would bring me my food up...just not tell anybody. oooooK....somehow the owner must not like a profit. whatever. I ordered. My friends came and all of a sudden I see another server up there...let's call him T. T was helpful and took their order for drinks. When my food finally came 45 minutes later by D, my group asked D if they could order and he said in a really bad tone "no more orders" and gave me my check and wanted his money right there...he even left without taking his tip. needless to say, we were angry so we asked T over and asked whether the kitchen was closed and he said no and took our order. So what was D's problem? we saw him slapping the table and getting all angry for no reason a few tables ago too. By the way, the food was really bad too. Wings were soggy and unedible. The burger was cold as were the fries. If I cared about this business I would have told the manager right there, but I'd rather the lose business instead. This place would not survive for a month if it weren't across from minute maid park.
- Pros: Honestly, none.
- Cons: Angry lying waiter, invisible manager, horrible over-priced food.
Located across the street from Minute Maid Park, this red-brick sports bar hits home with great food.

The Scene
The place is packed during every Astros' home game, but it's virtually empty in the off-season. Predictably, the decor is a stuffed-to-the-gills collection of autographed jerseys and posters of sports figures. Intent on watching the game? Sit downstairs--the mezzanine section has just two 13-inch TVs.
The Draw
The food wins big points, but drinks and service are somewhat lacking. The incredibly delicious crawfish po'boy is Tuesday's standout special. Wash it down with $2.50 Mexican beer or $1.50 well drinks. The children's menu is priced inexpensively, including $3 for a plate of chicken nuggets.
Terrible customer service!

This last weekend, I had family in from out of town for the "Cheer Bowl" which was held at George R. Brown. At lunch time, we were all starving and decided to walk to Home Plate as it was open and nearby. Upon entering the restaurant, we stood and waited for about 10 minutes before bussing our own table. We literally used the clearner they left on the table with a rag and had to clear and clean the table so we could sit down. We figured they were just slow. Then a man approached us and told us that if we were hungry, we were in the wrong place! He told us he was the only person working there Saturday and that it would be very slow. He then rushed us through ordering our beverages and informed us that it was for our own good that he rush us. The food didn't even take that long to come, and tasted decent. Had it not been for the rude server, the experience wouldn't have been so bad. But I left embarrassed for taking my family to such a rude establishment! They frequent Astros games, as do I, and have vowed NEVER to eat here again due to the rude treatment we received. What kind of impression of Houston was this person trying to give to all of the out of towners who dined there on Saturday? Minute Maid Park is one of the largest "tourist" attractions in the city. What was he thinking? We asked for an extra plate for one of the entrees we were sharing with a child and he brought us a saucer! Absolutely ridiculous! We will never return to this establishment, and it's a pity because the food was decent and very convenient for Astros games. It is my very strong opinion that people like this should NOT work in the customer service industry. Next time I would rather get in my car, pay to park yet again, and go to Burger King!
- Pros: NONE
- Cons: Extremely rude service!
A great sports bar!
by colt45
I start off every Astros game at Home Plate. They have free parking right across the street from the ballpark!! They have a dozen TVs and the bartender is a fast drink maker. The beers are four bucks when there is an Astros game but I hear they are less when there isn't a game. I have fun every time I go there. Oh yea, unless you want bar food, don't bring your appitite. The food is gross. Really gross.
- Pros: beer are cheaper than neighboring bars (Larry's and the BUS)
- Cons: food quality

My family ate at Home Plate Bar & Grill. I was very disappointed. The food was not very good. The hamburger was dry, the grilled chicken salad tasted like there was a jar of mustard dumped on the salad, the nachos consist of chips and cheese poured on top and I did not find that the prices were inexpensive. I was not impressed. We will not eat there again nor will I recommend it to anyone.
