Understated Montrose lounge spotlights area musicians and DJs.

by Contributor

The Scene
The simple red and black interior, dim lighting and sleek couches give this cozy bar a lounge-like ambience. Tables and chairs in the back are ideal for large groups.

The Draw
Community-minded and socially conscious, this bar is much more than a place to hoist a Guinness. Owner Denise Ramos has created an inviting venue for area DJs, live bands and artists. The crowd consists of artists and grad students mixing with conservative, professional types. An indie-flavored jukebox includes hits by Yo La Tengo, Guided By Voices and Cat Power. Patrons can also test their skills on the vintage Pac Man and Galaga machines in the back room.

  • Pros: Jukeboxfriendly stafflive bands

Had a good time

by aus10m

Cheaper drinks than most places in that area. Has a small stage and a decent size bar. They have local bands and artists to perform here and also have a karoke night sometimes. Casual dress code.

Proletariat = Tool of the State of the Texas

by jtermine

I have a Louisiana drivers licence -- they denied me access into the bar. The bouncer told me my ID is expired. Louisiana drivers licences are renewed with a sticker on the back. We showed him the sticker. Wouldn't let us in. Said "well this is texas." As if a bouncer from a bar in midtown Houston has the right to deny proper legal documentation.

Fine. If you're from Louisiana, don't go to this bar! Apparently they don't respect the legal documents from other states in the UNITED STATES. Total garbage. It was a hole by Baton Rouge standards. Learn to run a bar! Or at least change the name of it. Also, the bouncer had a cold sore on his face, which means he has herpies. I should have walked away when I saw his herpies staring at me for fear that he touched any glass in that bar ever.

  • Pros: A liqour Licence
  • Cons: Cold sores on staff, parking, neighborhood,

Tried it twice so far...

by vaf08

...and we all enjoyed it. Dark bar. Quick bartenders. No fuss type of place. We wandered in one night when it was karaoke night and it was really entertaining.

I like the Proletariat.

by houstonbarperson

The Proletariat is a great bar. The beer's cheap. Pool is cheap (free sometimes) The jukebox is cool. Mostly, the crowd is good: Lotsa fun people, a few typical snobs. It does have a bit of an insider vibe, but just show up a few times and people start to recognize you. Music shows are usually good too. I've seen local/touring bands I like , but it's luck-of-the-draw if you don't know the band : Sometimes it's the best band you never heard , sometimes it's the something you hope you'll never hear again, and sometimes it's background sound while you have a beer and hangout.

The bartenders are almost always friendly, though I've seen them be mildly hostile towards people who act like they're in some fancypants downtown bar. I have no complaints, I've gone quite a few times, and will definitely go many more.

  • Pros: Good, cheap beer., Good local bands., A lovely dive.

Best Kept Secret

by rebeccaloo

I just discovered this place last weekend. I can't believe I have not heard about it before....

It's a very cool atmoshphere. Bad ass jukebox.

Great drinks for dirt cheap. Great place to have a drink and talk with friends. I will go back for sure.

bad experience!

by joeblanks

Went out with a couple of friends, and had horrible service. The bar tenders seem to favor their friends over any other customer. I guess you have to know someone there inorder to have a good time.

  • Pros: decent drink prices, location
  • Cons: bad service, bad parking, bad ventilation
