Good food, newbie service

Pleasant and bright atmosphere, good sandwiches (their croissants = win) and soup, and great desserts (key lime tarts, cheesecakes sqaures, and lemon squares are my favorites). The strawberry lemonade is a good drink choice (note: it's on the sweet side). But on the negative side, the service is a bit lacking! This place went from counter service to waited tables... Not sure if it's the management's lack of experience, but it's frustrating to see your waiter standing around while you're waiting to order. Other thoughts: I read a bunch of reviews of this place online and they all seem to say "mediocre this or mediocre that". Not sure where these folks are from, but I've eaten way worse food in Houston in far less pleasant restaurants :) First-class gourmet, it isn't. But for the price, it's inifintely better than eating at Chili's...
- Pros: sandwiches, atmosphere, desserts
- Cons: where's my waiter?
Best Breakfast

We had breakfast here in the post-Ike setting. Of course, everything is new and sparkling. The quiche was excellent and accompanied by a generous fruit plate. The pancake thrilled the 6 year old. The breakfast bacon and egg on croissant pleased my husband. The service was friendly and, while not prompt, adequate. The place was full by the time we left at about 9 a.m. to walk the Strand and see the recovery efforts, completely happy.

I'm casting aside all of the nightmarish stories I've been privy to from former employees on this one and basing my review off of my own unfortunate encounters with the owners of this mediocre establishment.
I used to be a regular here (loved the tomato basil soup), until today. Poor service from a server and the owners seem to be of the mindset that the "customer is always WRONG". Don't waste your time or money on this place. They don't deserve it. Go to Mosquito or Speculoos, both far better than this dump.
- Pros: tomato basil soup (on days that its not scorched)
- Cons: OWNERSHIP
best chicken piccati ever

I've eaten at this restaurant many times and everything is good. Would it be possible to have the recipe for the chicken piccati?
What a dump :( Avoid at all costs

Gosh, can I give them 1/4 of a star? :/ I have been a regular customer up until today, where I have encountered the worst service of my life. I felt like I was being singled out and passed over when I have ordered my food. Gee maybe I can speak to the owner, hmmmm, maybe not, since I won't be ever coming back to this joint, which is, like other reviewers hinted at, too pretentious for its own good, and the food is mediocre at best. And guess what, today, no Italian rolls? Hmmm....it is a bakery, right? Or, wait, a cafe......I get it, that allows them to overcharge prices and underdeliver.
- Pros: Hmmm...none
- Cons: Service, prices, island attitude
Customer Service Nightmare

Today's visit was the absolute worst experience I've had in a year at Sunflower. I was in a party of 9....large group, I know. The restaurant was busy, but not really any busier than normal. Since I go to lunch with business associates, its always a better option to split checks and we take advantage of it whenever possible. The menu does state that they do not separate checks, but 9.7 times out of 10, the waitress asks if we want separate checks. Today was no exception. However, the waitress came back 15 minutes after offering to split the check, only to tell us she didn't have time to split the check. So, we all took out our credit cards and wrote our individual totals on the back of the receipt. When she realized what we were doing, she pitched a fit! Told us that there was no way she could run separate cards. Since this is a pretty standard practice at most restaurants, we were floored and told her we had a problem. She pulled her manager over, who fussed at us for our ridiculous suggestion of running all 9 cards. She started by explaining that the menus state that they cannot split checks. We responded by saying that we were offered that option, and while we understood that they couldn't give us separate checks, we didn't understand why they couldn't split the 1 check onto different charge cards. The manager told us that if we wanted to do that, we'd have to stand in line at the register. We explained that the waitress had told us she didn't have TIME to run all of our cards separately!!! The Manager should be ashamed for not asking what the issue was and getting the facts prior to fussing at us!
We ended up having to put the total check on one card and we all left Sunflower saying that we'll never go there again.
Customer service is pretty simple....if you offer something, don't go out of your way to avoid delivering that option.
- Pros: none, as far as I'm concerned. The mediocre food doesn't make up for the service.
- Cons: SERVICE is Horrible!!!

The last time I went to the Sunflower was about 3 weeks after they opened the 14 st location. The service then was abysmally slow. Today, while the food is OK (not great, not horrible, just OK) the table service had improved immensely. However, after lunch I attempted to purchase some baker items. After waiting at the counter for almost 10 full minutes, I asked for help and was told As soon as I wait on this table. A man in a blue shirt came out from the back and I asked for help, which was given up to the point where he deserted me at the cash register where I stood for another 7 minutes before I just dumped the items and left. In this time of tight money and slowing economy, no shop can afford to lose customers standing there with money in hand, as this place does. My second visit was my last. Lousy service + ordinary food = keeping my hard-earned $ in my pocket.

FYI,
I just called them as we are planning on visiting next week (sorry I pre-rated). In any case they've moved (consolidated). They are now at 14th and Post Office as a restaurant bakery venue, same name. Hours are Tu-Sat 8am-9pm, Sun 8am-3pm and Mon 8am - 5pm.

This is a great little place. If you are a soup lover, its a must try. They have the most delicious soups and sandwiches. Its a great little homey place for a Sunday brunch, and makes a great date place. It's always quiet and has great atmosphere. Make sure you check out the bakery cases if you visit, the desserts and specialty breads are not to be missed.
Lovely patio dining.

This is a lovely cafe/bakery. Just had a great lunch--good food and good service! Tomato-basil soup is best I have ever had. Desert, chocolate pecan pie, was just like home made only better! I will be back soon.
- Pros: good food from a non-chain cafe
- Cons: noisy inside
