Great for lunch

by CSMobileUser2 at Citysearch

Went here for a quick lunch with my girlfriend today. Thought the food was great (I had the Portobello sandwich; she had the chicken salad sandwich). Nice sized portions and really friendly staff. Would definetly reccomend.

Longtime Favorite

by MizEm at Citysearch

I dined here at least once a month since it opened its doors (in 1998 or 1999, I think) until shortly before Ike. The employees and owner were always friendly and helpful, and the cuisine was slightly unusual and very good. By far my favorite restaurant in Galveston, and one of the best "breakfast" spots EVER; and I find the prices and portions to be consistent with other establishments of similar calibre.

For optimal enjoyment, I recommend going there for an early breakfast and staking out a table on the porch, ahead of the hordes. As a matter of fact, the only less-than-wonderful experiences I ever had here were when I chose to dine there at very busy times: parking and dining space is limited, and the high ceilings make for a very clamorous atmosphere when the place is packed.

Though I now live in Hill Country - and only occasionally make trips back to the area - you can bet my next trip will include a visit to Mosquito Cafe`!

  • Pros: Great food and atmosphere
  • Cons: Parking, noise and crowds during peak business hours

Love this place

by tallguyhou at Citysearch

This place is fantastic. They have a great selection of sandwiches, burgers and other plates that are always changing, always fresh and always unique. Whatever slaw they have as a side option is always fantastic. The staff is very friendly and I just love the food. The only drawback is that it can get crowded and difficult to get a table at times, but a crowded restaurant means good food! I definitely recommend this place and I'm a foodie.

  • Pros: food, staff, quality
  • Cons: seating

Do Not Waste Your Money

by AC1979 at Citysearch

I have never really been a fan of this cafe, but after yesterday, I will NEVER return. We tried to take a co-worker here for her going away party, and the owner threw a FIT b/c we tried to bring in a cake with us. I tried discussing it with him in a nice way, but he was extremely RUDE and DISRESPECTFUL so I am doing everything in my power to spread the word. Of course, once I expained that we had 10-12 people coming to eat there, he "allowed" us to bring our cake in. Oh, and we had brough an outside dessert in before for another party, and there was no problem. So how was I to know he wouldn't allow it? It is one thing to have a "policy", but the way you enforce it says a lot about you and your establishment. This guy should NOT be in a business where he has to deal with people b/c he is AWFUL at it. The food is not even that great, and it is WAY overpriced. You may as well go somewhere else where your business is actually appreciated.

  • Pros: Waitstaff is nice
  • Cons: Overpriced, Owner is HORRIBLE

Not open for weekday breakfast!

by lambowner at Citysearch

We spring breaked in Galveston this year, and since we had heard good things about the restaurant, we decided to go for breakfast. Every ad we saw for it, including the ad in the Galveston magazine we found in our hotel, stated they are open for breakfast and lunch every day. Their website still says that in the "about us" section. But when we arrived on a Thursday morning, they were locked up tight. I guess they decided to change their hours, but not their advertizing. Annoying. Thus, I have nothing to say about the food.

my favorite eatery south of Houston!

by Martha1948 at Citysearch

My family and I were in Galveston this past summer and asked a few locals where to eat on the island - every single person we asked mentioned this restaurant as being their favorite. We were far from disappointed - their unique menu featured great salads all with homemade dressings, one of the best burgers any of us had ever had, and a number of other items our group had a chance to try and loved! I would recommend this place to anyone AND everyone who appreciates good food!

  • Pros: Homemade food, Unique items, Amazing desserts
  • Cons: Has been busy when we visited with a larger group - we called ahead the next time.

Freshness and ambience are noted draws for this bistro in the historic district.

by Contributor at Citysearch

The Scene
Urban escapees, bleached-blond locals and foreign-tongued tourists swarm this chichi coffeehouse nestled in Galveston's historic district. They've heard about the lovable modern-American menu with rotating chalkboard specials and fruitfully garnished plates, plus thoughtful extras like myriad javas, flavored teas and just-baked pies and scones served with lightly sweetened whipped cream.

The Food

Pining for breakfast? Fuel up with the inventive egg-less Mosquito Benedict (a savory scone layered with portobello, shrimp, artichoke hearts, asparagus and serrano hollandaise) or the fluffy, golden egg frittata, piquant with roasted corn and tingling green chilies. Regulars smitten with the BLT should also get a handful of the Mambo roasted pork with chutney on toasted focaccia. West Coast-style entree salads and deep plates of pasta are just as energized.

Friendly with great food.

by robaba at Citysearch

We had dinner here and was so impressed we came back for breakfast. The food was different and delicious. It made you feel you were a regular in a small time cafe. Despite being rated as not kid friendly, my 12 year old was the one who suggested returning there! It is one of those restuarant that when you hear someone is going to Galveston, you would recommend it.

  • Pros: food quality, unique menu, home town feel
  • Cons: you have to order at the counter

Good veggie food in a world of mediocre seafood.

by maozed at Citysearch

Mosquito Cafe is a rare find in Galveston. The food was delicious and there were plenty of vegetarian options. I had some sort of pesto salad that was more than I could eat. The blueberry tea was a hit with me and my friends because it tasted like pancakes. The restaurant is cozy, cute, and attractive. The sangria's pretty good too. It's a little bit expensive, but not outrageously so, and it's worth the price. I'd go back here if I visited Galveston again.

  • Pros: Vegetarian options, Good tea
  • Cons: Somewhat pricey
