Nastiest Bar outside Afghanistan

Some people revel in the fact that it's labeled a dive bar excuses the fact that its truely the worst bar i have ever been in outside Afghanistan.

• Pros: Leaving with your life and disease free
• Cons: Nasty, low-budget clientel, smells like urine

Best dive in Houston?

I've been in Houston a year now, and this is the best (dive) bar I've found. Great place to go and drink and not break the bank. As the sign says out front, the TV is, in fact, quite large.. But, this place is more about drinking and talking than it is about watching sports (you can go to Chumpps for that). Good jukebox with a mixture of country, classic rock, alternative music. Bartenders are very friendly, and you can get a bucket of six cold ones for about $13. This place is hardly "cheek to jowl" with a ritzy hotel, since it sits across the street and across the railroad tracks from "civilization," tucked in behind a small strip shopping center. Alas, "train shots" have been discontinued, but the "wrong side of the tracks" ambiance remains.

• Pros: cheap drinks, no windows
• Cons: small, can get a little crowded

Not for a meeting with the boss or for brandy after the opera: It's a dive--and it's a good one.

The Scene
Cheek by jowl with Houston's ritziest hotel, the one formerly known as the Ritz-Carlton, this amusingly outdated, circa 1950s watering hole developed a kind of reverse-snob panache a few years back, and now enjoys a curious mix of skate trash, blue-collar beer guzzlers, upscale slummers and Gen-X slackers.

The Draw
Imagine Houston's no-zoning sensibility extended to bar patronage. Don't take offense if a flirty barmaid calls you "honey," and don't get upset if a train comes rumbling down the nearby tracks and drowns out the jukebox. To compensate, the Roll-N offers "train shots" (a special drink each evening) for just $1 whenever the choo-choo goes by. And several do.

Great place to hang out inspite of the small place. Everyone is friendly! The bartenders are great!
