Nice Place

I frequent Valhalla almost once a month and I must say it never gets old. Cheap for under/graduate students, Texas beers are less than $1.00 and domestics are closley priced. If your not a Rice student it is very easy to find, park in the entrance 22 visitor lot and its about a minute walk.
- Pros: CHEAP CHEAP CHEAP
- Cons: If you cant find free parking, you have to pay for visitor lot.
Intimate Rice campus bar is ideal for inexpensive beer and intriguing conversation.

The Scene
Restless Viking souls and debt-ridden grad students alike will delight at this re-imagining of Valhalla (the mythical resting place of heroic Nordic warriors)--a bar that serves 12-ounce cups of Shiner Bock for a buck. Located in the basement of Keck Hall, this non-profit bar is a cross between a German beer hall and an Ivy League frat house. The unique U-shaped ceiling and piles of books stacked in corners add a studious ambience to this quirky tavern.
The Draw
The crowd is as diverse as Rice's curriculum. Burnt-out chemistry students, history professors, graduates of other institutions with absolutely no affiliation to Rice, even the maintenance guys are counted among the regulars here. The small, one-room design creates a social atmosphere. Want to relive your college years? This spot may be for you.
- Pros: Free Ms. Pac Man
Drink outside!

I love this place because it fits in a graduate student's budget, and is within walking distance of my institution and the metrorail (for getting home). With good weather, there will always be a crowd on the lawn outside, extrememly diverse in cultures and styles. Great for people watching and meeting friends.
- Pros: cheap, people watching, walking distance
- Cons: parking

Valhalla is a hidden bar below the chemistry building on Rice's campus that is run by current graduate students. It boasts the cheapest drinks and most interesting patrons in town. Tap beers start at $0.85 and the most expensive bottle is $1.75. The only downside to this bar is the difficulty parking, but if you can find a place in a nearby neighborhood, the walk is definitely worth the CHEAP BEER!!
- Pros: Cheap, Laid Back, Drink Outside
- Cons: Parking
