Good food!

by JNZ09

We drive from 45-south so it's about a 20 minute drive for us. When you first pull up it smells like fish, but guess why? Because it's by the water! I'm willing to put that aside because I'll be eating inside anyway. We usually go on a Saturday so there is a wait. They give you this really really good bread once your at your table. The stuffed jalapenos are really good. The caesar salad is good. I get the Shrimp Jamboree which has shrimp cooked in 5 different ways. I'm not one for stuffed shrimp, but theirs are pretty good. It is kind of pricey so we don't go very often. All in all, the drive, the smell, and the wait are well worth it.

  • Pros: The bread and the view
  • Cons: The smell once you arrive and the wait

fantastic

I've been to the Monument Inn a few times. Every time I wonder why why it took me so long to go back! The 20 minute drive is offset by the wonderful seafood, service and the VIEW..oh and the cinnamon rolls. They have done a big remodel since my last visit and the place looks great but the tables may be too close together..try the alligator as an appetizer and my favorite entree is the blackend redfish with pontchartrain sauce..you should check this hidden gem out people!

  • Pros: great food and perfect view
  • Cons: a bit of a drive

Not what I expected.

by rebarmanstan

I visited Monument Inn a few months ago after staying away for over 20 years.  This restaurant, in times past, was a meeting place for family and friends. I was very supprised at the over-priced menu,  since we could not eat the food.  The fried oysters and shrimp could not be consumed my me or my guest.  I was embarrised and felt robbed by the check.

  • Pros: Great Bread and Salad
  • Cons: Over Priced and poor quality food.

best seafood in town!

by foodlover456

I've been coming to the Monument Inn for 20 years. The food is always delicious and the cinnamon rolls are to die for. They have recently remodeled the entire restaurant and banquet rooms (due to IKE) and the place is better than it's ever been. I try something new almost every time I go there but my favorite is the panfried shrimp. The place is always busy especially on weekend nights. Ask for a window table to better see all those huge ships that go right past the restaurant. Our service, while not polished like a 4 star restaurant, is always prompt and polite. If you haven't tried out this gem, you need to..It's a little out of the way, but worth the trip.

  • Pros: quality seafood, fair pricing, great view
  • Cons: a little drive to get there

Good food offset by restaurant not banning smoking.

by Bob77021

Food was great, portion sizes were more than ample. Waitress was very personable.

BUT, don't think about going into the bar for a pre-dinner drink unless you're okay with being confronted by smokers sitting throughout the area, puffing away without regard for non-smokers sitting next to them.

It was so bad, several women had napkins held to their noses, trying to filter out the smoke from getting to their lungs.

  • Pros: Food quality, ample portions.
  • Cons: Smoking not banned.

Not what it use to be!

by dongerload

I have been going to this restaurant since I was a kid and have always enjoyed it. My last visit though will probably be my last. The misses and me recently went and were kinda surprised by the price increase portion decrease and overall quality of food. We ordered 1/2 dozen oysters on half shell which looked gross with black/green lumps in them not to mention the shell particles that were in with the oyster overall I would pass and this is the third straight time this has happened. The misses ordered bowl of shrimp, chicken & sausage gumbo it came in a much smaller bowl than they use to serve it in and had absolutely no flavor to it. I ordered a bowl of craw fish bisque and have had this dish several time before but never in this small of a bowl. The bisque is usualy heavy and creamy but instead it was watery and thing. The cinnamon rolls were still good though. Also we had to wait about 15 minutes for a hostess to sit us with many available tables.

  • Pros: The waiter was good but had a sign saying hostess needed, so understandable.
  • Cons: quality of food was poor and price was higher than normal.

Monument Inn

by RichTourGuide

I am a professional Tour Guide and I always take my clients to this restaurant when we are in the area. For a visitor to Houston, this is a must. San Jacinto, the Houston Ship Channel, Battleship Texas, and Monument Inn, what a combination. The food is always good, the service friendly, and the view. It makes you proud to be a Texan and a Houstonian.

I was taken to the San Jacinto Inn all of my life and it is now gone, but the tradition continues at the Monument Inn.

  • Pros: Location, View, food
  • Cons: Getting There for first time

Busy on weekends, good customer service, and good food.

by Silly_Mongoose

I took a group of about 25 people here on a Sunday afternoon. Our reservations were made a few days in advance. Despite our reservations and arrival confirmation, it took about 20 minutes get a table. I am not complaining, just stating the facts. After being seated, service was prompt. The atmosphere is nice. You can see ships coming into and out of the bay. The dining area upstairs gets fairly crowded on weekends though so definately make reservations in advance. The food was okay. I ordered redfish with a ponchartrain wine sauce. There was quite a bit of salt in the food but it was good. Before we ate they served us bread and cinamon rolls, which were great. All in all it was fun and a good place for large groups.

  • Pros: Nice eating on the bay.
  • Cons: Food could be better.

Great views!

by canwetalk

Yearly, I have to go to the Monument Inn for the terrific views of ship channel traffic, the proximity to the Battleship Texas & San Jacinto Monument. The food is average, with lots of fried seafood on the menu. The young waitstaff are friendly, helpful, efficient. The decor could use a little freshening, but heck, I love the place!

  • Pros: Views of the Ship Channel & boat traffic
  • Cons: A little out of the way

Great Party Place

by customer99

I had a birthday party for my daughter downstairs and everyone is still talking about it. The service was fantasic and orderly. No one had to wait for the food or drinks. The setting up of the room was perfect and I have nothing but good things to say about the place. Everyone was so nice! The manager was great and very professional. I highly recommend it to anyone having a party. My friends and family thought I paid double of what I did. It is very affordable!

  • Pros: The manager and waitstaff, parking and food.
  • Cons: Little hard to find. Send maps out to your guests!
