Natural sandbar island and esturary

by vitius at Citysearch

I Have been around the world and I can recognize Galveston for what it is a natural evironment filled with local flora and fauna, including animals of the human kind. I also know what Galveston is not... a manicured resort with imported sand. If you want a great family style natural experience Galveston is great. If you want all beaches to look exatly the same maybe you should stay by the pool.

  • Pros: easy to get to and lots of natural beauty
  • Cons: mosquitos

Shrimp N' Stuff has the world's best fried shrimp. State Park has decent accomodations for a beach bum like me.

I love this place. You can't find a more relaxed and friendly place than Galveston. I was 4 years old the first time I went and have been back a dozen times since. I laugh everytime I see the pink trailer house on stilts and wonder what kind of character owns it. Off shore fishing is great, even better is fishing off the pier with my 3 year-old at the state park, especially because you don't have to purchase a lisence. This is the perfect place for beach bums. If you're expecting 5 star hotels and white sand beaches, don't bother. We don't want a bunch of bitchy snobs cluttering up the beach anyway.

Good Deal

by andy24 at Citysearch

Although Galveston is certainly not a world class beach it's not as bad as the first reviewer suggests. The sand is the large, granular brown kind, not the white sugar sand that some people demand. But if you're not rich and would like a beach getaway give it a try. The off-shore fishing is pretty good too!

  • Pros: Inexpensive, Not Crowded, Good Fihing

Gross!

There is NOTHING pretty about Galveston! When you travel the world and see what REAL beaches look like, you will never again get into the toilet water the Galveston offers.

Stretching along a coastal island barrier on the West Bay's south shore, this park is a 365-day activity center.

Overview
Salty marshes, coastal prairies, sandy beach dunes and maritime wetlands make this 2,000-acre park a perfect stopover for many migratory birds. From the elevated boardwalks and observation towers, you can spot resident wading and shore birds. Four-legged friends include raccoons, armadillos and marsh rabbits, while two miles of beach allows surf fishing for spotted sea trout, sand trout, redfish, black drum, croaker and flounder. Small freshwater lakes dot the park between four miles of nature trails.

The Experience
Campsites with water and electric hookups and group trailer areas are available year-round at 150 multi-use sites. There are also 10 screened shelters, indoor-outdoor showers, picnic sites, a fish-cleaning shelter, nature trail and a two-lane concrete boat ramp. Guests can go mountain biking or take guided tours that explore the animal and plant life of the park.
