What Our Expert Scouts Say

Hobbit Cafe

Great vegetarian and healthy fare along with cozy outdoor seating at this Tolkien-inspired Upper Kirby favorite, tucked away off Richmond. Sandwiches come classic (read: huge) or slim, and everything with shredded carrots as the default side, naturally.

THEY LOST MY CREDIT CARD. After brunch the waiter asks me where the credit card for the bill is. Having already given him my credit card, I ask him the same thing. Turns out that he lost it! THE MAN LOST MY CREDIT CARD! I should also tell you that this waiter also happens to be the MANAGER. The manager of a restaurant has lost my credit card.

The staff is in a panic, I'm beside myself envisioning my credit score going down the drain and having to argue with the credit card company about phantom purchases. My guests and I go inside to be in the air-conditioning while we wait out the credit card hunt. The hostess inside is rude to us and tell us in a snotty voice to “just be patient” and that "everyone is looking for it." The woman who I'm assuming is the assistant manager is telling me that no one has ever stolen a credit card before but that they do sometimes fall off of the tray. THIS HAS HAPPENED BEFORE? Then why not get some credit card holders that don't result in temporary loss of card?!

In the end they finally did find my card (it was underneath a refrigerator in the back) and I am slightly amazed to tell you that they did charge me and my guests for the meal and that I subsequently paid for it with my lost-but-now-found card.

I do not appreciate being snapped at by the hostess and I don't appreciate that I was made to feel like the bad guy. You guys lost my card, this is my credit score on the line, this is potentially hours of hassle on my part to cancel a card, dispute fraudulent charges, and then wait for a new card to come in the mail. I will never go to this restaurant again. If you decide to brave it, for heaven's sake pay in cash.

I was REALLY impressed!. I visited the Hobbit Cafe back in the 70's when it was known as being a vegetarian place for the most part. It's hard to believe that I had to be told by my son who wasn't even born in the 70's that I need to try this place again. I had read the online reviews and went with an open mind. It is tucked away. The parking is very tight. We went on a Tuesday early evening and were able to park right in front, but like I said - it was a tight squeeze and the last spot left.

We ate inside. I think on cooler days, I would like to sit outside though, and there was plenty of room to do so. Our waiter, William, was absolutely wonderful - a very personable guy. Three of us ordered burgers and were all very happy with them. Another ordered the spinach enchiladas with a side of guacamole and it looked very appetizing....I heard no complaints from anyone. The fries were good as was the salsa and chips.

I had the merlot wine which was wonderful. I made sure to find out the name of it so I can purchase some myself.

So, my first re-turn visit to the Hobbit Cafe after 30+ years was a good one. I will definitely go back.

AWFUL BRUNCH. I have never written a review for any restaurant..but my recent experience at Hobbit Cafe was awful and I had to share. That was my first time to the restaurant. I'm fairly new to Houston. My friends and I enjoy trying different places for brunch. There was quite a long line and wait to be seated so my friends and I order drinks. My friend ordered the Mango margartia that came out of the machine and it was disqusting! It did not taste like a margarita. It had an old mold taste like the machine needed to be cleaned! I ordered a bloody mary and we also all agreed that it was disqusting..It was the worst bloody mary I have ever had! My friend said it tasted like I was drinking salsa and...actually it did.. Third friend ordered the belini...it was not as bad as the bloody mary or the mango margarita but was not good either... Two of us ordered the beef fajitas with eggs. That was awful and my scrambled eggs had huge chunks of EGG SHELLS!!!!!! ????? My other friend ordered the avocado omelet....which had eggs shells in it as well. ..My friend said that she ate at the restaurant a while back and it was not as bad. She said that it went way down hill since the last time she was there...I will never go back there..and definaltely not recommened going there. We didn't complain, none of us are that pickey..We just laughed and joked all day about our disqusting experience was there.

Very good food. I saw this restaurant driving by. My wife, children and I tried it out last night and were very happy. The restaurant sits beneath some beautiful trees. It's nice to sit outside on the deck under the trees.

There were lots of healthy food options and the food is very tasty. As someone who doesn't normally eat healthy, I did not sacrifice anything taste-wise. Very good.

My only criticism, and this is very minor, is the tables are cheap plastic. I think they could improve their atmosphere a little more buy adding nicer tables and linens. But making that change could result in price increases and I imagine part of the appeal of this place is that it's not expensive.

Delicious Mushroom-Swiss Burger. I am a huge fan of the Martinique burger. Rarely can you find something so delicious that isn't either completely overcooked or dripping with fat and oil. The sauteed mushrooms and onions make my stomach sing hallelujah! My hat's off to he Hobbit Cafe for knowing how to do right by this once in a while burger eater. Some people can't have a burger without fries, I see the shredded carrots as a welcomed change from the norm. I wash down my wonderful meal with a fresh fruit smoothee. My favorites are the Strawberry Kiwi and the Pina Colada. Sitting on the patio, I enjoy the weather before it gets too hot and before the mosquito's start coming around in earnest. Definitely a wonderful place, that is, if you can find somewhere to park.

Great food, great service, enjoyable experience!. The food here is absolutely healthy and delicious! Raisinbiscuit gave a true review and I can't think of anything different. My fave was the Chicken and Beef Fajita meat Nachos. If you like cheese, it doesn't get better than this. The food takes an average amount of time in the evening, but its much faster during lunch. The waitstaff is always helpful and I was impressed with the help I got when ordering. Anselm has a twin too! Ben is the cute babyish younger twin, so don't be confused! But all of the staff are approachable, and you will always find this place so relaxing with tasty food.

LOVE this restaurant!. I am always in search of restaurants that have fresh, healthy food on the menu. This place is it. I try to eat here as much as I can. The food may take a little extra time compared to some places, but it is worth it. This is due to the fact that everything is prepared fresh. I highly recommend the fruit salad and Smaug's Delight. But, really, everything is delicious. You always get plenty of food. I order the slim sandwiches. I can't even imagine what the regular ones are like! I usually ask for Anselm when I go. He's awesome, but everyone that works there is. Oh, and it really looks like Middle Earth! Check it out!

Honestly,

Me

hobbitually disappointing. Here's the problem: the food here tastes like something I could make myself with basic ingredients from an average grocery store. And my cooking, I must disclose, is amateurish and unsavory. I'm artless in the kitchen--as are they. Plus, this place should be bigger on hippie / vegetarian / raw food stuff.

Hobbits, Wizards, Elves, & Humans!. I have been eating @ the Hobbit Hole Cafe

for 25 years. The food is Fab!Tthe Hot Spiced Tea is off the chain! The Ambience is very Middle Earth.! Anytime I am asked to recommend a resturant by new or old friends visiting the Houston, TX area the Hobbit is always #1 on my list.
