“The best tables have a view of the short order cooks that are always BUSY turning out orders in fast sucession.”
“If you want an appetizer better order it with your drink order or it will arrive with your entree.”
“When I was a student at UST (1992), I discovered the great TexMex food at LaTapatia and for $5.00 you fed 2 people easily.”
“huge menu lists the myriad of inexpensive breakfast, lunch dinner and late-night TexMex and Mexican delights.”
“This is a great place to dine in or order out.”
“Food is great, service is excellent, and the margaritas are wonderful.”
“the last three, that's right, three, times my family and i have eaten at this place, the waitress has upped our bill by adding items we did not order OR changing prices from the menu.”
“Take-out food is usually ready in ten minutes or less; service in-house is friendly and fast.”
Fair warning.
The chicken I got was raw, the food was freezing cold and the service was so slow, it would have been faster for me to sign up for cooking classes and then cooked it myself.
THEN, they overcharged my friend and I by $5.00. They just thought they'd slip that past us. When I asked her about it, she tried to make it sound like it was a legitimate charge or that she didn't understand English. When I asked her in Spanish, she got quiet and then got it fixed. I know she did it on purpose, but I can't prove it.
Just not worth it, no matter how you look at it. It's obvious they are here for the hyper-drunk college crowd. Not a safe place for anyone else.
Disgusting and dangerous. I wish I could leave zero stars. My friends and I got so sick after eating here. The food was alright aside from making us all sick, but the salsa was slimy and the meat they use is really dry. These people should go into a different business. No wonder they serve so much alcohol, you have to be hammered to eat here.
horrible service. the food was alright but the service is horrible. im 21 but i do tip well but our waiter was such a bitch she rings up my receipt with the correct total and once i gave her my credit card she charged a little extra hoping i wouldnt notice so i tipped zero and i was pissed couple days go by and she actually had the nerve to charge a tip on my meal. you bet im pissed off and now its my turn to rip them off.
Square Fajita Nachos and Bottomless Cafe.
When you arrive late night, you will observe that the tables might feel a little sticky and the bathroom lighting is a little harsh. Hopefully, you will get a booth, because they are more comfortable.
Out comes the ice water, chips, and sauces. Don't spill on the menus in front of your date. Order the coffee. The margs there are strong, but it's probably past last call. Go ahead, select some sappy Luis Miguel songs to turn off your friends. Oh no, you lost track of time, and the waitperson is back. You need to quickly order.
Let me make it simple and simply awesome for you--Here's the fool-proof list of what you should order for two--
A small queso
A beef gordita
A half order of fajita nachos
The mole chicken enchiladas (boracho beans rice, salad for garnish)
You will need to to ask for a to-go box. And, I recommend that you tip 20%, because you have been at the table too long staring at what's left of the nightlife in Montrose.
My hat's off to you. Recent renovations have given this place a more serious restaurant, but have stripped it’s 24 hour status. With the renovation, they have improved their menu as well as making the restaurant a more family oriented place. The additions include a patio and a newly designed interior. The margaritas are still strong, the staff is still helpful, and the atmosphere is still good. I recommend that you have the enchiladas verdes . It is an off menu item that will surely have you convinced that this place can make a decent enchilada! They might not be as classy as some of the other restaurants in the area, but they are a good value for the price.
I once was a frustrated food critic, but no more!.
Thanks to the power of the interwebs I can post pompous and masturbatory reviews of any eatery I've visited. My Life Is Now Complete!
Onto My Review:
Decor: Just like a Mexican Restaurant! WHO KNEW!
The Service: The kind of thing you might expect from humans with all their ups and downs! Amazing!
The Food: Some of it is really good! Some I didn't like. Other people liked what I did not, the fools. I must say, however, NOBODY DIED.
In Short: The beans are good. Anything else is up to you.
use the menu to keep track of prices...or you'll be cheated!.
the last three, that's right, three, times my family and i have eaten at this place, the waitress has upped our bill by adding items we did not order OR changing prices from the menu...and each time for $3 to $4 bucks. now, while that may not seem like a lot, multiply that by the number of tables per day. we have never had this problem at the original "la tapatia" in the montrose...i would strongly recommend anyone who likes the restaurant to make the drive and go to the original place (even though it has moved further west on richmond)! also, the queso con chorizo is 10X better at the montrose restaurant...the stuff at the richmond/ chimney rock location is flavorless in comparison. we did wait months between trying the chimney rock la tapatia...hoping it was simply one bad apple. but, no! we will NEVER return...and when confronted, management supports the cheating and lying.
this place should be avoided like the plague...and i would rate it 1/2 star...except that's not an option!
good food, good times. I eat here regularly and my favorite things are a chicken burrito drenched in queso, and a nice strong margarita, and the mango margarita is good, too. Alejandra has waited on me several times and was super sweet!
Good price. The food at lunch time was excellent. It came out in 5 mins after I ordered and was piping hot and fresh. Yummy enchiladas and taco. 7 dollars for 2 enchiladas a taco, rice and beean plus a tea. Great food and service
I really miss my favorite tacqueria.... When I was a student at UST (1992), I discovered the great TexMex food at LaTapatia and for $5.00 you fed 2 people easily. I love TexMex and I have tried all sorts of restaurants with outstanding reputations for latin cooking. Now I live on DC and when I visit Houston I head directly to LaTapatia because the authentic tacos (barbacoa, carnitas, & shrimp), tortas, tilapia, enchiladas are excellent! It has been fun introducing LaTapatia to my friends that venture to Houston with me and as much as they enjot Papadeaux's they talk about the food at my favorite tacqueria. Try it!!!
