Editorial Review for Houston's – by Citysearch Staff

In Short
Burnished brass and stained wood complement roughly mortared brick and the occasional plant. Amid ubiquitous earth tones, corporate types and small parties (celebrating or simply living large) occupy deep booths done up in fine upholstery and lit from above by pin spotlights. Burgers, prime rib and steaks are the specialties of the house, but the menu also includes salmon, salads, pork chops and roasted chicken.

This place serves delicious burgers, chicken sandwiches, sides (in the fall, at least), and has the best veggie burger I've ever eaten. But they have to be good to get away with all the ways they try to make dining unpleasant. They won't take call-in orders. They won't take reservations. So basically, if you want the privilege of eating the food, you have to spend about an hour in the bar, even if you're willing to eat at home. Oy! And the waitstaff can be rude (althouh often, they're nice). But the food in Houston is so bad, I find myself at Houston's a fair amount (although I try to go at off-peak times). However, I do it grudgingly, as I fervently resent this restaurant chain, delicious as it may be. Maybe this economic downturn will dislodge that stick and convince them to cater to their customers.

I couldn't believe it. My daughter and I went to Houston's on Westheimer for lunch. They had a crab cake special. My daughter order it. I had the veggie burger. When the bill came, it was $46.00. She had a Sprite to drink. I had water. Shocked, I looked at the bill to see the item prices. The crab cake was $29.00! For two crab cakes at LUNCH! I couldn't believe it. That was uncalled for. I will NEVER go there again. They have taken advantage of me for the last time. So don't assume the "specials" at lunch are reasonably priced. They are not!
