Editorial Review for Bookstop – by Cyndy Williams
The Scene
This converted art deco theater between Montrose and Rice University serves hip Houstonians who'd rather spend a late Gulf Coast night cruising a bookstore than a bar. The lush, deco feel of the place was preserved, and the books and magazines are placed with a smart understanding of the metaphors of space: A huge periodical rack replaces the old movie screen, literally at the bottom of the building, while art theory floats high up in the balcony. The coffee bar is up there, where book lovers sporting tattoos or Hush Puppies can gossip or brood and read Ginsberg or Vogue.
The Goods
Another factor contributing to this Bookstop's scenester potential is its proximity to the venerable Cactus record and video store, which makes for the full multimedia evening experience.

Insider Tips
The ExtrasAside from signings by the famous, there are also Friday night poetry readings, dead writer birthday parties and discussion/lecture groups.
Know Before You GoIt's sometimes hard to find the most common classics, but the bestsellers are stacked chest high, the self-help books are plentiful and cleverly categorized and the selection of books on film and theater is, fittingly, impressive.
