The Scene
This converted art deco theater between Montrose and Rice University serves hip Houstonians who'd rather spend a late Gulf Coast night cruising a bookstore than a bar. The lush, deco feel of the place was preserved, and the books and magazines are placed with a smart understanding of the metaphors of space: A huge periodical rack replaces the old movie screen, literally at the bottom of the building, while art theory floats high up in the balcony. The coffee bar is up there, where book lovers sporting tattoos or Hush Puppies can gossip or brood and read Ginsberg or Vogue.
The Goods
Another factor contributing to this Bookstop's scenester potential is its proximity to the venerable Cactus record and video store, which makes for the full multimedia evening experience.

My favorite aspect of this place is the building it's in, a former movie theatre, but I'm not crazy about the selection. One of the reasons I shop at independent, used bookstores is to discover hard to find books, and mid-titles - not just what's hot right now. A good example of a business that does this well is Powell's, and Bookstop would do well to emulate them, at least in cultivating staff that live and breathe books. Right now, Bookstop has a lot of the same cool factor as Powell's without the same breadth. They have a pretty good selection of film and screenwriting books, though.

This bookstore is an asthetic Barnes & Noble. A theatre renovated into a bookstore, it has everything a chain would cater to. If the occasional stair climb doesn't bother you then get to this gem. It's fun.

I love Bookstop because it has a large variety of books. If you need a snack or coffee it is available to you at their store. I love books and I spend a couple of hours just wandering around looking at different books. If I want to I can sit down and read a book.

The Extras:
Aside from signings by the famous, there are also Friday night poetry readings, dead writer birthday parties and discussion/lecture groups.
Know Before You Go:
It's sometimes hard to find the most common classics, but the bestsellers are stacked chest high, the self-help books are plentiful and cleverly categorized and the selection of books on film and theater is, fittingly, impressive.
