Editorial Review for National Museum of Funeral History – by Freeman Williams
The Scene
The museum provides a fascinating--and unusual--place to spend a couple of hours. It makes visitors appreciate the wide breadth of styles and, well, goofiness that makes up this country's funeral traditions.
The Collection
There are funeral vehicles of every stripe: horse-drawn carriages, a sleigh, a one-of-a-kind Packard bus and a breathtakingly ornate Japanese hearse. Other morbidly delightful exhibits include "Funerals of the Famous," dioramas of mourning apparel, a home funeral (with the undertaker's accessories still neatly packed in their cases), an early embalming room (complete with tools) and a section on the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Funereal oddities like a casket built for three, an example of the short-lived glass coffin and a fantasy coffin in the shape of a KLM jumbo jet are also on display.
