Editorial Review for Hickory Hollow – by Eric A.T. Dieckman
In Short
Cowboys love this rustic barbecue spot with its wood-plank walls and photos of bluegrass bands. The menu describes the various sizes of chicken-fried steak portions, the biggest being "big as a saddle blanket." The juicy catfish po'boy is enormous and the salad bar comes loaded with pickles, jalapenos and salad greens. Ribs are tender and moist and the house barbecue sauce makes anything taste grand. For sides, go with the onion rings.

I remember Hickory Hollow from about 20 or 30 years ago, when I lived on Fairbanks-North Houston. They were just "around the bend" on Fallbrook, and I used to drive up there and eat several times a month. (This is LONG before the racetrack was built, and much of Fallbrook and FNH was lightly developed.) The chicken fried steak was hanging all over the plate... literally! It hung over the sides of the plate, and they used to put (what they called) "River Bottom Mud" gravy on it. Oh! Was it good! That, and a baked potatoe, and a tall iced tea, was still the best artery clogging food I've ever had! I used to take all my business contacts out there because they wanted a "True Taste of Texas." I couldn't think of a better place to take them but to the Hickory Hollow. It's true Texas, from the food to the ambience and decor. I loved the music, too. I've never heard the "singing cowboys" anywhere else. Loved the barbeque, too. But if you want a great steak, or a chicken fried steak, get your butt on over to the Hickory Hollow right now. Don't wait until tomorrow. Do it now!
Pros: All pros.
Cons: No cons.

You better have a hell of an apetite when you come cause these are the largest chiken fried steaks around, and the amount you get for the price is awesome if you have kids, gravy taste exactly like my grandma's fried chicken gravy which was AWESOME but night the typical white cream gravy most people associate with CFS, great place to go after/before horse track as well, and wow!!! on the ribs!!!!! tender tasty melt in yo mouth
Pros: food, price, portions
