Editorial Review for Vargo's Restaurant – by Citysearch Editors

In Short
Founder Al Vargo finally sold this Memorial-area landmark in the '90s, but it continues to be the site of countless weddings, bar mitzvahs and private receptions of all stripes. The reason you must come here: a private lake and eight acres of gorgeous gardens. The country-club feel extends to the menu, which consists largely of competent, if somewhat predictable, dishes like snapper Pontchartrain, strip steak and roast duckling.

We were very disappointed with the service, food selection, food preparation and overall experience that our group of 32 had on prom night. The prom menu online was a complete meal with several choices for entrees for $45.00 which included tax and gratuity. We prepaid the dinner the day before and our reservation was for 8 pm. Our group of 32 arrived by limo at 7:40 and we were not seated until 8:30. The menu posted online stated that a 14 oz rib eye was available and when we received menus a 10 oz rib eye was the only steak available. We had one server for 32 people and the table was set for only 30 people and two people were placed in lounge chairs at the end of the table. The dinner was not served until 9:45 and several people received the wrong food. Instead of receiving stuffed chicken they received linguine chicken and were told that it was the stuffed chicken. Most of the steaks were undercooked and it appeared to be done deliberately to get the meal out of the kitchen. Drinks were never refilled and the server was rude. The result of all this cause our group to be late for the prom. The conclusions that we reached were: Vargo's was unprepared for this dinner and if they couldn't meet an 8 pm reservation then they shouldn't have agree to this time. There should have been more than one server for this large group. This is fraud for publishing one size of steak online and providing smaller steaks for the event. If one type of food run out they need to be honest with the customers and tell them. With prom season approaching I can assure you that we will not recommend Vargo's to any other prom group.

We had a party of 8. I wouldn't think that is too unusually large to handle, but it took over an hour for our food to arrive after we had ordered. When it came, it was cold. I guess it had spent much of the hour waiting to be picked up by our waiter. Every member of our party sent the food back to be warmed. We asked to see the manager to make sure he knew about the service we received, but we were told he was busy. I've never heard of that before. The atmosphere is nice, and the food was decent after it was warmed, but I would recommend avoiding this place.

Pros: atmosphere

Cons: service, managment's response to problems

A throwback to Houston's early days, this lush lakeside haven is still a charmer.  See the full editorial review.
