What People Are Saying About Pappasito's Cantina

In Short – Brace yourself for the noise, circus-like atmosphere and, during peak times, a long wait for a table. None of which has discouraged diners who have made this chain popular in Houston. Who can fault sizzling platters the size of manhole covers, great value and seemingly indefatigable service? Tortilla soup, Pappasito's famous fajitas and shrimp diablo are all worth a try. If strolling mariachis who sing "La Bamba" every five minutes get tiresome, escape to the pleasant patio. –

Call the Health Department!!!

by JimnSusn

Great smiles, slow service, good manager, mediocre food (little seasoning in the meats), great tortilla chips (light and warm) but the one issue we couldn't ignore was when we ordered our drinks, got a dirty frosted mug for a beer, returned it to the bartender who simply put the "really dirty" mug back in the freezer and handed us a new one. After returning to the table the manager dropped by. We told her the story and looked down to see one of our water glasses was also dirty (something dark stuck to the inside). The manager explained they'd just replaced the motor in their dish washer an hour earlier and she'd speak with the bartender. Overall -- noisy, $45 for two mediocre meals and 2 beers, and a feeling that this restaurant is on the skids.

Pappa's empire mediocre tex-mex

by KitchenInc , Citysearch Contributor

And we arrive to the Pappa's Empire's version of the Tex-Mex restaurant. Like everything else in their chains, Pappasito's is good, but not great. Everything is designed with cost in mind, and while they actually pull it off to a certain extent, you come out feeling a little cheated. Pappasito's is like a classic car replica, it looks like the real thing, but in the end it's just not. I guess a lot of it has to do with the fact that when you eat at a Pappas restaurant everything feels like it's less about the food than the bottom line.

You will find everything you might want in a Tex-Mex restaurant at Pappasitos, the huge margaritas, the pseudo Mexican decor and ambiance, the smell of fajitas grilling. Speaking of fajitas, they're the dish that I would recommend; with ample proportions and a garlic sauce that is to die for, their fajitas are the one thing that Pappasitos really excels at. The enchiladas and quesadillas are OK, but they pale in comparison. I would stay away from the fried avocado stuffed with chicken and green chile, which, as exciting as it sounds, fails to deliver nothing but bland tastes and soggy textures.

The real problem with Pappasito's is that you can find local places like Teotihuacan that can make everything they do so much better and cheaper. But if you're ever in a hurry, their side-of-the-highway are hard to beat when it comes to convenience.

Warning

by RMS

I went to Pappasito's 5/22/09 for margaritas and appetizers with a friend. We decided to swing by another place for a minute after finishing. It was far less of a hassle to use one vehicle instead of both of us driving separate cars to the same place. When we returned 45 min later my car had been towed and I had to pay $200 to get it back. A very high price to pay for margartias and appetizers. I would completely understand if I left my car in the parking lot wthout eating in the restaurant but that was not the case. I will never return to this location.

Very Unique TexMex

by ladieswholunch

Again, a lunch crowd and with an urge for Mexican. This was my first time at a Pappasito's and man was it good! The service was very slow, we were about a table of 7 so not too big a group; but we were there almost TWO HOURS, lots of of spent saying "where is that waitress?". The food, however, was really good. They have a really broad menu, so there is something for everyone. The portions were HUGE, so I recommend sharing. All in all, a good experience, but I'll hope for a better server next time.

  • Pros: Lots of good choices
  • Cons: SLOW service
