Editorial Review for Reliant Astrodome – by Guy Short
The Venue
When it opened in 1965, it was the first fully enclosed, air-conditioned domed stadium. The roof panels were clear, allowing for natural light, but were painted after baseball outfielders complained about glare. The lack of sunlight dried out the grass and led to the development and installation of Astroturf.
The Experience
It's hard to miss the gleaming white dome of Harris County Stadium--or the Astrodome, as it's better known. No visit to Houston would be complete without driving by or flying over it. Today, it's a choice locale for the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, major-league soccer, championship boxing, bullfighting, concerts, and political and religious meetings. It's the patriarch for what's now known as Reliant Park, which includes Reliant Stadium, Reliant Arena, Reliant Hall and Reliant Center.
