What Our Expert Scouts Say

Sherlock's Baker Street Pub

This Rice University-area bar has a fun atmosphere, good prices, and is great for groups. The kitchen has surprisingly healthy options, too, plus some bar food staples.

Good Place to Chill. I've visited the Westheimer location of Sherlock's (original store in the chain) a number of times over the years. This location has an interesting mix of clientele, including people from different parts of the world (e.g., UK, Ireland, Scotland, Germany) who are in town on business/for conferences and are staying at one of the large hotels in the adjacent Westchase area. The crowd is also more age diverse than you would likely find at many Houston bars. The racial/ethnic composition of the crowds I've observed is also fairly diverse, to the extent that (IMO) anyone could go there and feel comfortable within the crowd - it is not a "_____" club or anything, all groups are represented fairly well to the extent that no one would likely feel that 'this place isn't for me' based on demographic factors. That being said, there is a dress code that prohibits 'gangsta'-type clothing, whatever that means these days...

There is never a cover charge except on New Year's Eve. There is live music every night except for karaoke on Sunday nights. The bands can _really_ be hit or miss for me, so I recommend going online to see who's playing on a particular night and finding out what you can about the group before going.

The bar does have servers, but when it's crowded (Wednesdays, Fridays, Saturdays) you're going to be better off buying your drinks at the bar. Also be prepared for a very crowded situation especially on Fridays and Saturdays. The bar staff is typically very good and friendly. I know several of them personally and many of the staff are sort of like family with each other and 'have each other's backs', so if a customer gets disrespectful and belligerent to the point of causing a serious problem, the doormen will be escorting that person to the parking lot (and 'out of their house'), firmly but nicely ('until it's time to maybe not be so nice'). Oh, and there are HPD officers on-site during the Friday and Saturday evenings as an extra measure of security if someone just can't have a good time without causing some trouble :-0

Drink prices are very reasonable compared to a lot of other places that I've been. Although several of the other Sherlock's/Baker St. Pubs in the chain feature a regular food menu, this location does not.

Sherlock's is not an "ambiance" bar (a place to feel special, elegant, or part of the pretty crowd). If you want that, you'll probably have to go inside the loop especially if you're younger and looking for the 'bar with the one trendy name' kind of vibe. It's more of a no-frills 'get your drink on' kind of place.

Pros: Low-key, relaxed atmosphere, decent drink prices, good staff, non-pretentious crowd

Cons: Gets very crowded on virtually all weekend nights, sometimes hard to get a drink due to patrons crowding at the bar for service, and uggghhh.....bathroom attendants

Not a bad place if you catch the right night. Let me first state, I have been to the place more than once. If you are looking for a place to chill without the midtown dance club vibe, this it it.

The place can be hit or miss depending on the band performing that night. Some nights are great, some are not so great. This past time a band called Cold Shot was playing. GREAT TIME. Band played great music, put on a great show.

Wait staff is ok...I typically just go to the bar. It's usually faster and easier.

I recommend giving the place a try if you have never been. Check the band schedule before you go though and maybe call ahead and ask the bar. Cold Shot I would recommend.

Not an older crowd at all! Worst experience.. On march 17.2011 for St. Patricks day. The service was horrible, crowd was huge and they make alot of $ so hire temporary help. Took atleast 45min to get a beer, not enough servers. We couldnt even get back in bar to close tabs cause the fire marshall said ht was to crowded so they lied to people stating the event was over just to gaet rid of people. Really unorganized. On top of that the vallet lost my car keys. Gets better the vallet guys were giving car keys to random drunk people with out tickets. If you like be around ignorant drunks then this is the place. They dont no the policy of stop serving a drunk.

Good After-Work Spot. Older Crowd. This bar is part of the bigger chain of Sherlock Pub Company. It is my least favorite Sherlocks mostly because it is usually an older crowd (aka creepy old men...no offense). This is because it is displaced from the liveliness of the greater metro area. If you are younger, try out one of the other several locations. The bands are always good. They rotate between all of the spots. If I am meeting a friend in the area, I don't mind stopping by for a few drinks. The drink specials are always good.

My new hangout. I am new to town and have been looking for a new spot to be my regular hangout and I have found it!!! This place was great! The bands are great! I couldnt believe that they didnt charge a cover. It so big and spacious with plenty of bartenders so that its is never difficult to get a refill! I love it!!!

Horrible. Please don't bother. This company as a whole has the worst management. You could die of thirst before you get waited on. I have given this bar multiple shots over the last 5 years and it has never improved. They are always understaffed. Furthermore, the band plays extremely loud. Can you give negative stars?

Ehh, there's better. It is EXTREMLY LOUD with the live music. The place gets over-crowded in a hurry and it is tough to get service. It is a much better place when you go with a group and there is not a band playing. Small place that gets packed. Seek other venues.

It's not on Baker Street, but the attraction of this relaxed little bar is elementary.. The Scene
Don't let the Spanish-looking exterior fool you--this is no bright, sunny bar with a Latin theme. The large lower level of Sherlock's has the look and feel of a grungy biker bar, with a tiny stage and beer-soaked tables. If the jumble of arms, elbows and baseball caps gets to be too much, head upstairs to the quieter, darker portion of the pub. Here you can people-watch or sit on a couch in relative obscurity.

The Draw

There are also lots of beers to choose from and some sort of sport is always on the TV at Sherlock's, so it's a good place to watch a game. You'll find plenty of pool tables, as well. The bands that play are mostly local, playing a mix of covers and original songs to an ever-present throng of merrymakers.
