Nestled in the middle of a strip mall (the Welcome Center) on Ranchester at Bellaire, Shanghai Restaurant doesn't stand out and wouldn't be a place you would choose if you didn't specifically decide to go there. But after one taste, I already know that this will be one of those staple restaurants to visit when I'm in the mood for good Chinese.
We ordered the clams with basil and garlic (off menu, written in chinese), the deep fried soft tofu, the salt and pepper pork ribs, and the fish with chive flower. My favorite is the salt/pepper pork ribs, perfectly executed with just the right amount of flavor & crisp, but still juicy on the inside. With standard Chinese restaurant decor and fluorescent lighting, you are definitely not in a fancy Chinese restaurant, but it's ok because the star here is the food.
My mouth is watering as I spy dishes whizzing by me, destined for other people's stomachs. The Quang Dong Beef filet and the sizzling beef (both just $10.95 ea) whet my appetite as I make a mental note of what i should try next time. All the vegetable dishes look tasty as well, from baby bok choy to snow pea leaves, I know even without tasting them that they will be good. I'm not a clam person but my husband devoured a full plate of clams with basic and garlic all by himself. I forgot to mention that they give you a free bowl of dubious looking but ok- tasting murky colored pork and barley consomme when you sit down as well.
But the verdict? If you're a fan of Fung's kitchen but want to try some quality Chinese cuisine where the real Chinese go for their meals - try Shanghai Restaurant, you won't be disappointed.
Insider tip: they don't have a liquor license so it's byob, I've seen some people come here with a cooler full of beer!
So disappointing!. So after reading in the Best of Houston Press I went to check the place out with my bf. I was so excited to go somewhere new for really good Chinese. Service was terrible even though there were only three or four other tables in the restaurant- we were seated and got sodas within five minutes but waited almost fifteen to place our orders. I ordered Pork lo-mein, an order of egg rolls and won ton soup and my bf got brisket lo mein. The egg rolls tasted very much like La Choy- very uniform in shape and ok but not great. The wonton soup was awful- broth was slightly fishy and while the wontons were beautiful after one bite that was full of gristle I couldnt eat any more- my boyfriend experienced the same. His brisket lo mein was full of large chunks of fat and even the flavor was very odd. I was so excited to find a new place and prepared to drive the distance for some great Chinese food but honestly it was so bad I do not dare go back. Even more confusing are the other reviews here?? I even double checked the address to be sure its the same restaurant. Wont EVER go back :(
Looking for the Best Chinese Food Anywhere? Look No More!. I'm American born Chinese and my mom was the best Cantonese Chinese cook around. The food here is about as authentic as you can find, cause it's like eating my mom's cooking. I too ate at Fu Kee back in the 80s, but when it closed I didn't know where the owner went. I just tried Shanghai Restaurant back in August 2008, liked it so much, that I ate there again that same week, then once a week after that for a good month or so. Since then, I'm there at least every other week! My favorite is the Ginger Scallion Chicken, the Fried Oysters, the Salt & Pepper Pork Ribs and the Sauteed Watercress. Hard to not order all of these everytime I go, but there's so much else that's good that I have to let the rest of my family do the ordering so I can try other dishes. Trust me, come eat here and you will not be disappointed.......however, it will set the standard and you may not be happy with any other Chinese restaurant! :-) !
most down to earth cantonese cooking you'll find. My family and I have been dining at this family owned restaurant since I was born (yes, even to back in the days where they were Fu Kee above DiHo supermarket), and there will never be any reason as to why we stop going. This is the most authentic, Cantonese-style cooking you will find in Houston. My favorite dishes are jew-yim-pii-gwut (salt and pepper pork ribs), gong-chow-nhao-hor (flat rice noodle with bean sprout, onions, beef) and dao-mew (chinese vegetable, i believe they're snow pea shoots, correct me if i'm wrong) - I love it so much that the owner who always takes our order already knows to write it down before I even request it. Shanghai Restaurant has yet to fail me on any of these three dishes. Don't be afraid to try something out of your comfort zone otherwise you'll never really taste authenticity! And no offense to cooltouch, but I think your wife needs to clarify the difference between Shanghainese cuisine and Cantonese cuisine to you.
Very authentic Shanghai cuisine. When it comes to Chinese food, I have an advantage that most Americans don't: I have a Chinese wife. As if that weren't good enough, she's a chef and connoisseur of good food. As a result of this, we have visited a host of Chinese eateries that cater to an almost exclusive Chinese clientele, almost all of them on the southwest side of town, and most of them along Bellaire Blvd between Gessner and Kirkwood. But if one really wants to experience a taste of authentic Shanghai cuisine, one need travel no farther than the Shanghai Restaurant. Really, to call this place a restaurant is a bit of a stretch. It's a shop, and a rather small one with maybe fifteen tables. But don't let the size of the place put you off. The food is top notch and authentic. The menus are in Chinese with English subtitles. As is typical with a Chinese restaurant, dozens of dishes are offered, almost all of which are very reasonably priced. I enjoy the spicy dishes. Even though they are spicy hot, the heat doesn't sit there and burn a hole through your tongue the way it does with some other types of cuisine. It feels more like the heat is scouring my tastebuds, thus enhancing the wonderful flavors of the dishes even more. Everything I have eaten there has been good, but probably my most favorite is the flounder. I don't know what it's called on the menu, but the fish is cut up into portions just the right size for chopsticks, stir-fried in a light batter, then combined with a spicy red sauce and vegetables. It's fantastic! The parking lot at this strip mall is always crowded, but there's usually enough of a turnover in traffic where you can find a space somewhere.
THIS REALLY IS GREAT CHINESE FOOD. People of city search I have some breaking news, the only way to get real Chinese food is to try real Chinese food. And to achieve that, you need to go to Bellaire where most Chinese cooking is authentic. Don' t fall for the over priced fried rice at marketed places without taste. Try the real stuff and believe me, there is nothing better. This place offers the best crispy noodles with gylon and beef and also fried stuffed tofu. They have nice dishes at nice prices. When your in their you' ll know it' s really good because it is one of the only places where there are only Chinese people eating there. But then again you can change that and be the smart business man who has been to China and wants to order the real thing in Houston. Be smart.

This is one of my ATF resturaunts in Houston. Tons of variety on the menu, very fresh ingredients,and very clean. Open late 7 days a week. Family owned and operated.
The best Hot and Sour soup anywhere.
If you are looking for Chinese food prepared for the American palate this is not the place for you. I have never been disappointed by this returaunt, it does take a little time to get your food because everything is cooked when you order it. Never warmed up.
