In Short – Inside Hermann Park, you can take a picnic and watch a concert or play--even better, it's free. Essential items for an afternoon or evening on the hill are a blanket, sunscreen and mosquito repellent. The theater was renovated in 2000 and holds a wide variety of family-friendly performances each year, including Cinco de Mayo and Fourth of July festivities. Also catch Shakespeare in the Park, the Houston Ballet and the Houston Grand Opera.
Back to the sixties
by Duffy_Dog at Citysearch
Viewing a performance at Miller Outdoor Theatre is reminiscent of a sixties lovefest. People bring the whole family, dogs included. I didn't notice any cats, but would not have been surprised to see them as well. Pick a mild night, and yo'll not have a better outdoor Houston Experience.
- Pros: Family Oriented, Ambience, Price ($0.00)
- Cons: Can be hot
Depends upon the weather...

Grab a couple of beach chairs, or even blankets and pillows; pack a picnic, and pray for a cool breeze. A very good variety of shows each season.
The one unpleasant note would be the heat; my family prefers to avoid July and August here, so we usually miss out on the Shakespeare Festival. If you go, remember your bug spray and bring water!
- Pros: free seating, fun atmosphere, ok to bring chairs
- Cons: not enough parking, heat in late summer
Romantic Date
by tbont2001 at Citysearch
For college students with little money to spend, this is the perfect place to take a date. Venues from the Houston Symphony to Theater Under The Stars perform here free of charge, the same shows that are sometimes quite expensive when performed at conventional theaters. Tickets are available on the day of the performance for reserved seating (again, free). If you are one of the first in line, you can get front row seats. You can also opt to sit on the grass hillside behind the seating area. You can bring your own food and drinks, including alcohol. In spite of the fact that it's free, this outdoor theater is a very romantic, classy choice for that special date.
- Pros: free, good seating, comfy atmosphere
- Cons: difficult parking
