What Our Expert Scouts Say

100 Percent Taquito

Great place for cheap and tasty Mexican street food- tacos, quesadillas, and more. The tingas are spicy and best when ordered the simple way, with cilantro and onions on corn tortillas.

Feels like you're on a street in Mexico. On the recommendation of a bona fide Mexican national, we tried this cute taco joint off of 59 near buffalo speedway.

Immediately upon entering, you feel like you're walking onto a movie set somewhere in Mexico city. A green bug with mannequins inside, brightly colored faux kiosks where you order and pick up food, flat screen tv's with music videos playing, and christmas lights zig-zagging across the wide black ceiling make you feel like you're dining alfresco at night somewhere. And that's exactly what they are trying to achieve, a Mexico city alley feel. They do it well.

Without even trying the food, I really liked this place but I think my expectations were too high. The actual food we had (we ordered two taco plates, the mixto and the pastor, bargains at under $4 for 3 4 inch tacos) was bland and a little bit rubbery. The chicken mole was all right and my husband said the Tinga taco was good, but the pastor was dry and tasteless and the fajita meat not much better. The tortilla soup with fresh avocado, likewise, was pretty tasteless and cafeteria-like in quality. The highlights were the agua fresca for $1.99 in melon flavor (tastes just like fresh cantaloupe!) and the unbelievably large and decadent tres leches $3.99, total overkill topped with whipped cream and caramel sauce - but moist and satisfactorily yummy for my tummy.

If I didn't have my own favorite taco stand to compare it with (Tacos Mayra on Beechnut), I would probably like this place more. As it is, 100% Taquito has a great feel ambience-wise, is really cheap and worth the drop-by if you're in the neighborhood looking for cheap eats. But if they want me to come by more often, they need to improve on the tastiness of their food.

Tips for 100 Percent Taquito

Very good. I´m from Mexico City and have been to 100% Taquito twice. I wouldn´t call it "100% authentic", but it´s the closest I´ve seen here in Houston. Specially the "al Pastor" stuff, is not exactly the real Pastor. Order anything else and you´ll be very happy.

However, if you compare it to all those Tex-Mex places (which are more Tex than Mex), then 100% Taquito is a oasis.

Serving swift and classic Mexican cuisine handy for those who work, live or play in the Greenway Plaza area.. The Scene
This sure-fire taqueria brings the outdoors in with its whimsical faux concession stand, murals of Mexico City, concrete floors and flowery window boxes. You may spot a Texas-type celebrity (or at least Ricky Martin shaking his stuff on video television) along with families and foodies applauding this recent gustatory discovery.

The Food
Taquitos--small meat-filled tacos often confused with flautas--are the draw here, served simply with a scattering of pungent white onion and fresh cilantro on soft flour or corn tortillas. The hot Mexican tortas, or sandwiches, are very good. Equally satisfying are the distinctive sopes: tiny rounds of thick, dewy corn tortilla cakes with crimped edges that hold a bed of roughly mashed, deep-flavored black beans. You want the whole enchilada? Seek Tex-Mex. Want the total taquito? You know where to go.

Great. Great food. You get the authentic taqueria taste w/o haveing to go to some dive taqueria. Very clean and very cheap.

Only bad thing is they say they got rated the best tres leches in town... but it is not really that good at all.

a great find. My friend from Mexico City brought me here once so that I could taste authentic mexican food. I loved the place and became a regular. Great tasting food, far superior to the typical Tex-Mex, with a view and a spanish MTV soundtrack. There is an open air patio, too. Downside is very slow service.

Truly Authentic !!!. This is one of my favorite restaurants in Houston. Their speciality is grilled meat served on homemade tortillas. Simple but very unique and very tasty! No salsa or nasty yellow cheese to hide the flavor. My favorites are the spicy port brisket and the banderies(sp). Also make sure to pick up a piece of tres leches cake. Wonderful!

so, what's a taquito?. i think taco cabana is alot better with more to offer. taquitos and quesadillas are the same thing except the latter has CHEESE. chicken is dry and salty. how come they dont have mild or medium salsa? its only extra extra spicy or mucous membrane burning spicy. the service was bad as well. the cashier paid more attention to the cook than to us when taking our order, which is why he got our order wrong. i dont see what is so great about this place. 3 little tortillas with meat, onions and cilantro for about $3. i'd rather go to taco cabana and get a real quesadilla.
