What Our Expert Scouts Say

May 08, 2013

If you are new to Indian Food or not quite sure what to order from their mouth-watering menu, try the six course Tasting Menu. We really enjoyed this menu and it was an easy choice on our initial visit. It comes with a Soup Flight (with three wonderful handmade soups), a Crab Cake, your choice of Tandoori Texas Quail or Tandoori Prawn & Dry Pack Sea Scallop, a Handmade Sorbet to cleanse your palate, your choice of Tandoori New Zealand Rack of Lamb or Tandoori Sea Bass, and you can finish it off with either the Cardamom-Spiced Chocolate Molten Cake or the Trio of Crème Brulee (Saffron, Cardamom & Pistachio). You really can't go wrong with the tasting menu and it represents a wide variety of Indian cooking techniques, flavors, and spices.

Upscale Indian food with a delicate balance of spices that clearly say Indian but doesn't overpower the flavors of the protein, legume or vegetable. Try the lightly battered pakoras, never tasted it quite like this before.

Best restaurant ever!!. I don't know what the negative reviewers are talking about. This restaurant takes the cake of Indian food places in Houston and restaurants in Houston overall! Went to dinner last night with my boyfriend. Service was terrific. We started with a fabulous bottle of Zinfindel and Goanese Shrimp sautéed with fresh curry leaves and coconut, and for dinner I had Lamb Rhogan Josh - which is a boneless leg of lamb braised with onions and anise sauce. Shared a side of spicy garbanzo beans and my date had an off the menu lamb tenderloin with baby potatoes and asparagus. I was impressed they had whole wheat bread, and of course had it stuffed with more lamb. Delish!! We will definitely come back again and again. What we had was so good! I hope we have enough will power to try other items on the menu. :)

Totally over rated. Very dissappointed, heard a lot of good things about this restaurant. The food was over priced, the saag had not been washed properly as while I ate it there was grit/soil in my mouth. The tomato soup tasted like it was something out of a can. The vindaloo was not hot (chili) at all. The yoghurt was sweet, I like raita with out any sweetness. Good points - brinjal was yummy and the waiting staff were awesome.

Very disappointing. We've been to Kiran's several times in the last two years and done take out many times also. Our experience has usually been good, even though the portions for vegetarian options have been quite small and the service sometimes has been a bit brusque.

We decided to take our visiting family for New Year's Eve dinner there. The first course of Tandoori veggies was lovely and succulent, but everything from there went downhill. The red pepper soup tasted very mediocre, not too unlike Campbell's Premium Bell Pepper soup. The sorbet was even worse, tasting like a store bought one. Still, none of it was too bad.

The main course was simply put----Terrible. The koftas were hard with little sauce, the vegetable dish was very dry with much of it hardened up. It seemed like it was mixed in with Indian pickles and put on a platter. The "apricot biryani" tasted like a microwavable TV dinner. The dessert was supposedly souffle, but tasted more like half cooked scrambled eggs.

All this would've been tolerable if not for the fact that my wife got sick within an hour or so of eating this meal. As the night progressed, the rest of us got pretty sick too (except for my in-laws who did not eat the souffle). The crowning glory was that we got charged an extra hundred or so bucks and the owner did not seem all too apologetic except stating that our bank will take care of it !!!!

Needless to say, we're neither going there ever again nor are we going to be too shy about discouraging our circle of friends and business associates from frequenting this place. I can understand such a terrible experience had it been some shoddy Indian restaurant in Hillcroft, but not from a supposedly upscale place such as Kiran's.

There are much better Indian restaurants in Houston that are more deserving of our patronage (Indika is excellent).

Good veg food, small portions, little expensive. We moved from NewYork to Houston almost a year ago. I have been to Kiran's 3 times now, 1st time I was there I thought that I am not going to miss NY Indian food anymore because food was great at Kiran's. But the other two times I was there it lacked something. I would say overall the food is good no doubt. (veg only, I am a vegetarian, so I don't know about non-veg dishes). but I think it's a little expensive, may be because it's right there in Galleria. But I would rather go eat somewhere else next time for equally good quality food but less expensive.

Amazing food, not-so-amazing service. I've been to this restaurant twice in the past few weeks, and was very impressed by the food both times. Not necessarily food that will remind you of your grandmother's cooking back home, but really quite delicious. I would even go so far as to say it was the best Indian food I've had in Houston. The ambiance was great and the selection of dishes was very good as well. I went with a party of six and we did not have trouble finding enough vegeterian entres for every one. I had the same server both times I went, and it seemed as though she kept forgetting that we were there. I had to actually get up and find her in the restaurant because she did not come by for 45 mintues after the entres were served and we were all out of water--not a good thing while eating Indian food.

Overall, though, it was good experience and I will definitely be back here again. Just hope I get a different server next time!

I must not get it. These reviews are gleaming, and Michael Berry does a very convincing job of stumping for Kiran's but after a visit I am left wondering. The food was tasty to say the least, but I do not understand paying 12$ for a vegetarian entree. It was noted by my waiter that I should probably get two dishes if I was going to stick with the vegetarian selections. My girlfriend and I wanted to get a glass of wine with dinner and found the selection was indeed very nice, however there was nothing under $9 per glass. I was only able to order one for each of us rather than the 2 glasses that I would typically have. Our bill was $86 and we would have spent more getting full had I not made sure we had 2 orders of Nann. The service was very good and the environment was very nice. Overall I am left wondering how the market for high end Indian food is dominated by magnificently overpriced purveyors.

ok food, terrible service.. Back when it was still owned by the people that had it under the name Bombay Palace it was a wonderful experience. Now the food is good but over priced, the service is terrible, place is stuffy. I would recommend Mantra in Katy, great food, fair price and always great service.

Avoid it. Bad food wether u consider price or not. I have been to 80% of Houston n surrounding indian restaurants and Kiran's was not a good experience. The ambience is good and thats it. The service is ok, but we go there for food and food was too much below expectation. Considering the price it charges it should be called waste of money. The quality demands for half of what it charges. We get better quality food for 1/2 the price in some places. Paneer makhni curry was watery and jalfarezi had no spice or masala, seemed like american stir fry mix veg. Dont go there if u want good indian food. Go only if u have a lot of money to spend and just want good ambience. (I dont drink so i wont comment about their bar.)

Great Food, Worst Service I have had in Houston... I will admit their food is excellent. We have tried their tikka masala and their vindaloos (although I am not sure why us Americans have to make vindaloo so mild in comparison to our British counterparts... we are in Texas for pete's sake... King of the Jalapenos!) ... but after three horrible services, we have banned them as our curry provider. One of the elder waiters is one of the rudest waiters I have ever met. He doesn't listen when you ask questions, at one point did not know the difference between lamb and chicken (we asked for chicken and had the nerve to tell us it was chicken as he took the spoon and shuffled through my friends plate being extremely offended we would even ask.. it was LAMB). Got even more offended on another visit after he said our credit card was declined even after the credit card company said it was approved the 1st three times he swiped it (and for the WRONG amount I might add). He refused to believe them after he spoke to them. All in all, the service is beyond horrible. So, if you don't mind being treated horrible and like a good curry... have at it. I have had enough myself...

BEST Indian food; BEST vegetarian food (and other food, but being a vegetarian I stick to this); TREAT YOURSELF & GO THERE!. WOW!!! Not only is this my favorite Indian food restaurant, but also it has the best vegetarian food in town! Please treat yourself and enjoy the experience and delicious food of Kiran's!!! A few reasons why you will fall in love with it: (1) the food is awesome; the spices are perfectly blended and compliment each other to provide you with the most amazing flavor while not overemphasizing any of the spices; (2) THE PEOPLE - Kiran is amazing; her family and the others at the restaurant seek to provide their patrons with not only the best meals but also wonderful experiences; (3) the atmosphere is diverse - the bar area is social; there are table areas that are social if you want an energetic setting; and there are table settings that are more private if you want a quiet, discrete experience; and (4) once you go, you'll be hooked and will return, thankful that you found Kiran's. Oh, and (5), if you are vegetarian, you will be thrilled with the selection that is offered, and their willingness to create even more fabulous dishes for you off the menu - just let them know what your preferences are. And (6) if you want to meet new people or have a special event with your friends or family, you'll enjoy the monthly wine tasting menus (sometimes champagne or scotch tasting instead). Come with friends; come alone; come with family - it's up to you. You'll meet wonderful people there at the bar and the special events, as Kiran's attracts loyal customers that enjoy coming back over and over.
