A neighborhood cafe with a friendly, small-town feel..
The Scene
Sheila Partin baked up this spacious, self-service cafe for Hedwig Village habitués yearning for a handy place to grab a mess of cinnamon rolls or a simple lunch. In case you haven't heard, her Houston-born bakery is downright famous for its pillowy-soft, sweet sourdough bread and addictive kolaches--so sweet, they've inspired a thank-you note from former President George Bush (it's hanging on the wall).
The Food
Everyone likes a piping hot breakfast, but Sheila's sometimes disappoints with slow-to-arrive, cooling plates, and the plasticware lacks down-home charm. Get past that, and enjoy delish buttermilk pancakes, a terrific breakfast taco and fresh-squeezed OJ. Lunch on hoagie-style sandwiches, distinctive for the signature breads. Best bites: the hamburger on jalapeño-cheese bun, chicken mushroom melt, house salad with sourdough croutons. Sheila's thick-as-a-brick brownie is serious business, with chocolate chunks and a fudgy center. Indulge.
