Editorial Review for Tony Mandola's Gulf Coast Kitchen – by Robin Barr Sussman
In Short
Lucky is the diner who snags the gently cornmeal-fried soft-shell crabs when in season, or remembers the Tuesday and Thursday lunch special of shrimp and crab meat spaghetti. Oysters Damian with pico de gallo, crawfish ravioli, and blackened snapper in lime butter are outstanding. Thick and rich, mama's gumbo is vibrant as is the Mississippi farm-bred whole fried catfish. Try to save room for the varied desserts.

I visited Tony Mandola's last night and both the food and service was extremely dissappointing. I will never go back. First, the hostess was rude upon entry. Second, our waiter was in absentia. Part of this was related to the fact that our waiter was waiting tables both inside and outside. This has to be the dumbest waistaff management decision ever. I saw my waiter, but only as we watched him walk in and out of the patio area, NEVER coming to our table. The food was mediocre. My food was truly bad, but the waiter did not appear until he presented up with our bill. My companions' fish was all overcooked. We had to request every refill for our table. An item we ordered was never delivered to our table, but was included on our bill. I pointed out to the waiter he would not notice such a thing because he never returned to the table to see if we enjoyed the food or needed anything further.
Cons: bad service, mediocre food

Great food, excellent atmosphere. The service was pretty good, despite being very busy. I'd recommend making a reservation at weekends, to avoid disappointment. I'll certainly be using this restaurant on my next visit to Houston.
Pros: parking service
Cons: some dishes are a bit pricey
