Teala's Mexican Restaurant & Bar
Owner
Teala's Mexican Restaurant and Bar comes to you from the same family who brought you Thai Pepper. They were especially taken by the unusual cuisine of the Yucatan while traveling there.
Although Thailand and Mexico are hemispheres apart, favorite foods share many of the same flavors and ingredients. Diners find in both an abundance of seafood, lots of fresh hot peppers, the zest of lime and cilantro, and the distinct flavor imparted by the wood burning grill.
Here at Teala's Mexican Restaurant and Bar, you will experience the subtle minglings of these two remarkable cuisines. On the table at Teala's are the traditional Mexican corn chips and salsa and you'll also enjoy black bean dip instead of traditional mole sauce. Teala's serves up a delicately flavored Thai version.
We hope you enjoy your dining experience at Teala's!

In Short
Teala's may be Houston's only restaurant that offers up traditional Mexican food with subtle touches of Thai cuisine. The ambience is jovial, with bold colors and cantina-style decorations. Menu starters include black bean soup, Yucatan tortilla soup and shrimp quesadillas. Specialties include camarones diablos, bacon- and pepper-wrapped shrimp cooked over a wood-fired grill and cochinita pibil, a Yucatan-style marinated pork roast. For dessert, try the homemade coconut ice cream, flan or fried beignet-like sopapillas.

I was greeted and sat inmidiately as i walked in, a nice surprice for being cinco de Mayo. I waited and exchanged looks of hunger with my friend as we got stuffed with fried tortillas. I knew something was off when we still had not received a menu after thirty minutes. I wondered if my waiter had to fly really quict to Yucatan or Thailand to bring a "special-exotic" menu. When i confronted him with my disapointement and frustration he was quick to s lap me back with a reply : "well...it is cinco de Mayo!". As i looked at the back tables half empty half full i replied that it was not my foult they were understaffed. As a bolting light and aristocratic air he left me talking in mid air. I was shocked! I would spect that from a hole in the wall struggling restaurant but not from this pretencious mexican restaurant. I complained to the manager and he was nicely supportive. The food was exellent, much better than your usual hustonian mexican restaurant. I hope next time that waiter gets the chiles out of his pan ties!

Nothing ticks me off quite as much as when a restaurant forces me to valet my car 3 feet away from their front door in their own half-empty parking lot. But I've been to Teala's during off hours when they didn't require this. The food has been great each visit. One time I must have been sitting by the bathroom, because the place smelled like raw sewage....which really turned me off to the place. Margarita's were always good. Service was typically average. The restaurant is nice, and has a patio which is nice during good weather (although it's on a busy street). However, Houston has too many great Mexican food places that are much cheaper (drive over to the second ward or up north main), not to mention the valet parking thing, so Teala's is probably out of my budget for the future.

One of my favorite things to do is come to Teala's after a long day at work, sit on the patio and enjoy a margarita! It has become a tradition with my friends over the last few years. Truly, the patio and even the inside of the restaurant are quite romantic, and in addition, the food is incredible!!! I have many favorites such as chicken alamades or the chilean sea bass. THE most amazing thing, however, is that this restaurant is always consistent. I never wonder if the food will be good- it always IS, or if the service will be good- it always is as well. The waitstaff is perfect. I am so excited because my husband and I are going tonight before we go to the movies. You should go too- you're missing out!
