Tips for Hickory Hollow Restaurants

I've eaten here a couple of times. The first was about a year ago. I'd read online comments about how they'd changed their chicken fried steak gravy & it was largely unpopular. @ that time, however, I was on a quest for ribs. They were very good.

Yesterday, I took my mom. I got a 2 meat platter--sausage & CFS. Mom's order included onion rings, which she loves. She couldn't finish them, though, because she said they didn't taste like onion---which we clearly could see they were.

My sausage was ok. After reading other comments, it might've been just the BBQ sauce I liked.

The CFS was very good, but I had to go to the counter, to ask what was in the bowl---which looked like a balsamic vinaigrette. I was informed it was gravy. It poured more like a vinaigrette, too. It was the worst 'gravy' I'd ever had on a CFS. Give me brown gravy, if you must---but give me gravy.

I then remembered the negative comments I'd read last year. Looking @ the comments here, one said their gravy was so much better than the standard/cream gravy'---which I'd have preferred. Another commenter referred to the 'sauce' on the CFS. She couldn't even call it 'gravy'.

I'm sure I won't be ordering their CFS again--unless they begin givin a choice of gravies.

Happy I found this place!. I've finally found time to write a review for this place. I think this place has good chicken fried steak and chicken fried chicken! I've tried the brisket and sausage and wasn't that impressed with it so I've been sticking to the chicken fried chicken breast. Also, the sweet tea always has just the right amount of sweetness! Another plus is that this place is easy on the wallet. I've brought family here from out of town and it tends to be a favorite!

Overrated. I just have to say the sauce is awesome but the ribs were so fatty I felt I was being ripped off. The chopped beef was mushy as well....not the best in Houston but not the worst either.

Ranch Dressing to die for. I have gone to this place for 4 years now and it's one of those places that you can never get tired of and by far my favorite BBQ place. In Texas, that's saying alot. First off, to the person who dissed the salad bar, that's usually the favorite spot for me because unlike alot of other places that have a token salad bar, theirs is fresh and the ranch dressing is to die for. They also keep all the other goodies (jalepaneos, zuccini sticks, carrots, etc.) there.

As for the food, I usually get the grilled chicken that's always tender and juicy and again, most other places keep some token "healthy" foods around for show, but this chicken is just wonderful and comes with hot BBQ sauce. I've also tried their smoked half chicken that just falls off the bones. The only reason why I don't eat that more often is that i go there for lunch and it gets a little messy. The prices are also very reasonable for the quality of food you get and the service is always friendly.

Good selection. I went to the Hickory Hollow because I had a coupon but forgot to use it when I was there - duh! I have to eat a low fat diet so I was concerned I wouldn't be able to find anything on the menu but they do have grilled chicken and to my surprise it was really good. The chicken was juicy, tender and came with BBQ sauce on the side. I also had rice and the salad bar - which is a bit lame. It's not much of a salad bar, it's really just lettuce tomatoes and peppers.

The dining companion loved his meal and I think that if I want to treat myself I'll go back and try something a bit less bland. It is crowded and obviously very popular.

Funky Texan cafe serves comfort foods from grilled steaks and ribs to chicken-fried steak.. In Short
Cowboys love this rustic barbecue spot with its wood-plank walls and photos of bluegrass bands. The menu describes the various sizes of chicken fried steak portions, the biggest being "big as a saddle blanket." The juicy catfish po'boy is enormous and the salad bar comes loaded with pickles, jalapenos and salad greens. Ribs are tender and moist and the house barbecue sauce makes anything taste grand. For sides, go with the onion rings.

Excellent for catering. Hickory Hollow provides good food at a great price. One phone call is all it takes...they do all the work and supply all the trimmings for BBQ even the tea. Just save room for dessert!!

Largest chicken fried steak you 've ever seen!. Aside from serving the largest chicken fried steak (even the smallest is huge!) the salad bar bowl is always fresh and tasty! If you go to listen to the free music and order a glass of wine, it is like a two for one deal 'cause it comes in a mason jar and you get alot for your money. If you go for lunch or during the day stop at Heights station next door to walk off your food and top off your Texas experience.

Overrated but not bad. I'm a native Texan but am now living out of state. I come back to visit family from time to time and am always craving my hometown BBQ. This summer, my sister raved about Hickory Hollow and wanted to show it off to my husband and I on our visit and swore up and down that it was as good as we were going to get in H-town for the price and portions...but she warned us she had only been to the original location near 1960 and that her friends said they were better than the Heights' Hickory Hollow. The Heights locations was closer for us so that's where we went.

I ordererd the chicken fried steak since that was highly recommended with some chopped beef, potato salad, and grilled zuchini. I was very dissappointed in the chicken fried steak. The meat was perfectly tender but the sauce was bland and it was missing some kind of salt or something. I ate a few bites and that was that. The potato salad was jamming as well as the zucchini. I of course had room for the ribs on my husband's plate since I didn't care for either of my meats so much. The ribs were excellent and nice and tender. The sauce was really good too.

So yeah for the sides, boo for their "award winning" chicken fried steak. Maybe next time I'll try the original location on the west side of Houston and see if they do it better.
