A GREAT Hamburger!!.
I have been going to Otto's since I was a Kid, and although the BBQ has always been good, I always go for one of their great hamburgers!
The doulbe meat and cheese is hard to beat, and even better with a side of fries...
The dining room and bar area is always full of some great characters discussing current events...
I had lunch there today and was informed that the closing is real, and probably only 4-6 weeks away, so you better get there and have a last taste of yet another Houston institution closing its doors...
A classic favorite of Houston barbecue lovers. Otto's, however, is up for sale and is expected to be closed and demolished in the near future..
The Scene
Founded in 1950 by Annie and Otto Sofka, the original all-American, wood-paneled hole-in-the-wall is still a favorite among all walks of life. Although probably placed in the second tier of Houston barbecue joints, it's safe to say that Otto's is experienced in the barbecue and burger department. Guests of the male persuasion retreat to the picnic tables out back and also chow down inside in front of the television on weekends.
The Food
The barbecued beef, ribs, links, pork, chicken and turkey is slow-cooked, juicy and tender served with a lean, vinegar-edged, smoky sauce. Big spuds topped with beef or turkey plus the mandatory potato salad and beans round out the barbecue menu. Assorted drippy burgers are prepared next door along with homemade pie and cake of the day, kid-friendly sandwiches, root beer, draft beer and such.
Best Ribs. Drop by there at least once a month, Hopefully, use them to cater one of our office parties. Great Food .. Great Service ... 2 mins from downtown
Bland BBQ. I can't speak for the quality of the hamburgers, but the barbecue is downright awful. If you?re looking for dry meat and a barbecue sauce without a hint of flavor then this is the place for you. To be fair, the people working there were really nice and the service was commendable.
good hamburger at a reasonable price. Stopped by right before closing. Ms Rosetta couldn' t have been nicer. She gave me a tour, showing where the BBQ was and a told a little history about the place. Hamber and fries were great. Ms Rosetta even dropped a rib by for a sampling. Great local flavor w/ locals.
Good burgers.
Good burgers, hole in the wall type of restaurant. Has been around for a while and is a popular spot for locals. Any kind of burger you can think of and cheap for the amount of food you get.
"I had a friend say he was upset because his burger was coming to an end".
DRY, DRY, DRY.
not a big fan of this place. not horrible, but by no means what i would choose...
brisket is super dry, ribs are fatty, sausage is ok. sides are good but very predictable. dont care at all for their sauce, too thin and bitter. service is great and prices are reasonable. memorial/galleria/kirby area is in desperate need of good barbeque (aside from goode and luling - both of which are better but not dramatically so) so i keep going just because its convenient...
Not so good. The only thing worth getting at Ottos is the country ham sandwich (or po-boy). The beef and other meats are not very good. It is average food and not nearly as good as George Bush claims it is.
eat at otto's; you'll need muchos!!!. Service is excellent. Food well prepared and adequate. Price affordable. Very satisfying.
Best Burgers since childhood....
I would have to say, without a doubt, that Otto's is the Best Burger Joint in Houston. Ever since growing up and playing soccer, I have always looked forward to an Otto's burger. Otto's has great "burger joint atmosphere", great service and always cold beer.
The only thing I could ever say that might be negative about a place I love so much is that their hours are way too short. Go there for lunch or maybe a very early dinner...but don't try to wait too late. It shuts down early
