They are not what you think..
The BBB is a scam. If one of the businesses you are considering has a good rating, they probably paid for it.
Check out the 20/20 piece aired in Nov. of 2010 with the following tag. It's sickening.

Supreme Autoworks on Artdale. I used to get my car checked here and got the maintenance done here. They never took care of the transmission and it went bad. I had to get a new transmission. This is not to mention the bodywork my car had done they painted over a red door and now the paint is pealing and I now have red showing on what should be a blue car.
Informed.
The "pay for a rating" is a huge misconception in regards to what the BBB actually does. They have non-members with A ratings, but somehow the media and the ill-infomed consumers overlook that for their own benefit. Doesn't seem to make sense.
The BBB is still a great venue that I use everytime I have a large business transaction. Hasn't failed me, yet.
BBB Will Tell You to Pay More Money for a Better Rating. The Better Business Bureau has always been recognized as an organization to protect consumers from companies with a bad business ethic and record. What consumers don't realize is that the BBB is not a governmental run organization. They are a profit make institution. It charges businesses to become members. If a company does not pay to join the BBB, the company will receive a low rating. Once a company does pay to become a member, it will receive a higher grade. This is misleading for the consumer. Check out the video from ABC's 20/20 aired on Nov 12, 2010.
G E care Credit hidden fees and no time to make payments aft. The GE Care Credit touts that there is no financing for 12 months. However if the payment is late 1 day after the due d ate there is a 39.00 fee. there is also a fee of 15.00 if payment is made with a customer service prepresentative. there is an additional charge
they don't have a problem taking your money. a company called positive air took a check from me so my infant son could have a light for his jaundice. I just got back from iraq and my insurance was in transition. the insurance has since paid this company but they won't refund my check. they keep telling me the person who signs refunds isn't there. it has been 3 months now. they have repeatedly hung up on me and I am now going to have to get a lawyer over 210 dollars. whata shame.
