The Scene
Located on the corner of Bissonnet and Montrose, you certainly won't want to miss this place. Check out Steel Lounge on the last Friday of each month, where you can browse the exhibits and shop while enjoying the CAM's famous "art-ini." A special shout out goes to the museum shop, which hosts the best darn collection of funky toys and tchotchkes in Houston.
The Collection
There's no telling what waits around each corner for you at the CAM, whether it be a glass-encased fire hydrant covered entirely in dried roses, a bag of face-shaped bread for you to take home, or a huge board covered with items of retina-scorching neon orange that the artist procured in Mexican mercados. You'll want to keep abreast of the continually compelling exhibits at the CAM and attend the openings--it's always a party.

***Note this site will not allow me to use the words p0rn or s3x in a review. Obviously they have not been to the contemporary Arts Museum, so please forgive my obvious misspellings. We visited the Contemporary Arts Museum in Houston to see the "Old Weird America" exhibit. I am an artist that comes from a long line of artists, so I expected funky, creative, controversial and intellectually stimulating. What I did NOT expect was the obscenity. Since when is p0rn shown publically? I'm not talking about cheribs wearing fig leaves or the Madonna's bosom. I'm talking about Walt Disney's seven dwarves performing indecent acts on Snow White. There were actual cartoon like videos of characters having s3xual intercourse. No restrictions were placed on entrance. No warning on the actual exhibit that the contents might possibly inappropriate for public viewing. (There was a small sign at the front door warning that some exhibits had "powerful" images and visitors might want to view them before or with younger visitors.) Nothing about needing to take little junior to counseling because some "artist" gets his or her jollies by forcing voyeurism on unsuspecting visitors. Come on, it's time to get off the snobbish artistic high horses and face reality...p0rn is p0rn. If If you want to show it, then check ID's at the door and advertise it. Don't pretend it's art and try to sneak it in under the pretense of elitism. The Contemporary Arts Museum of Houston aught to be ashamed.
Pros: The exhibits are not permanent and will rotate out.
Cons: The judgement of exhibitors is questionable.
