What Our Expert Scouts Say

October 21, 2012

The baristas may be brusque, but the coffee is done right and the blueberry muffins are the stuff of legend. A cool ivy-covered patio plus extra seating out back and a steady rotation of live music make it a great place to start your morning or end your night.

Great coffee with an extensive menu of pizza, sandwiches, etc. The patio is beautiful, looks out over the busy Montrose intersection of Dunlavy and Westheimer.

BEWARE THE OWNER! I've taken out all the details to avoid any ridiculous reprisal, but I think I can at least safely say . . . I called the police . . . The police took a report.

Think twice - or three times! - before going to this place!

Never again!. My friend and I had dinner here on December 29, 2011. I had the spinach caprese salad with chicken, and she had the duck salad, which also has spinach as the main ingredient. They were ok, or so we thought. The next day, both of us were sick the entire day. For the sake of those with sensitive stomachs, I won't describe my symptoms.... I was in bed the entire day. I called Brasil to speak to the manager about the salads, but he was too busy to speak to me, despite the two messages I left him. Fast forward a week, and I still have not heard from anyone there. I was told the manager's name is Brandon.

Terrible service, food was cold, not coming back. Great location, interesting interior, menu is varied, looked promising but the service is TERRIBLE (rude, surly, slow) food was COLD and WRONG.

STAFF dodged me when I tried to talk to someone about correcting the order, finally agreed and delivered the missing food 15 minutes after we finished eating.

Shame, food would have been tasty if served hot, but nothing short of firing the staff will iimprove the service.

Don't believe me - look at the last 10 reviews - 7 of 10 gave it 1 star.

Doesn't want to be a coffee shop. I've gone to Brasil on several occasions, and I like the atomosphere. However, I've recently decided that Agora will be my go-to coffee shop. Brasil's owner/manager apparently has an issue with people lingering over a cup of coffee (a little astounding, given that their coffee is more expensive than Starbucks). After sitting for a little under an hour (and contemplating whether I wanted to move to wine or stick with coffee for my next drink) it was suggested that I might move outside (it's over 100 degrees outside today), to free up space for "current customers." As I actually feel very strongly about not taking up space when a restaurant is busy (and I tend to go through several cups of coffee while working), I was shocked by this request -- had I been sitting longer, if I did not have uneaten food next to me, OR had there not been several open tables, I would have entirely understood. However, there were four open tables, no line at the coffee bar, and it was a time of day when business was slowing down. Clearly, Brasil just doesn't want to be a place where people linger, even when it's not packed. As a result, I suggest heading to Agora, across the street, where the service is friendly, the coffee is good, and the staff understands that you might linger over your drink. That said, the coffee at Brasil is good - just understand that it's not a place where you can sit and relax.

I don't care if you are hip, don't be rude!. I love the food, and the atmosphere is lovely! (Tasty veggie burger) However, I did not enjoy my dining experience due to a hipster server who behaved as if I was inconveniencing her (eye rolling, banging my plate on the table, the works). While I understand that days go bad, this young woman was down right rude. There is no reasons to glare and huff at costumers.

Rude is never in style, I don't care how "hip" you are.

Terrible Customer Service. Although in theory it is a good place to study/eat, I was very unhappy with the service. After paying $13 for an omelet and coffee, neither my coffee nor my food was made correctly. Furthermore, while I was working, the manager, without asking, took the chairs from my table to accommodate a larger party next to me. When I mentioned that I was going to be joined by a friend, he told me that "if she comes, I'll bring you another chair." And when I tried to move to a larger table, I was told by the same manager that "unless you want to pay for 4 people's worth of food, we need to reserve this for larger groups."

I understand that Sundays are busy mornings, but it is unacceptable to treat a paying customer that way. I used to frequent the cafe many times in the past to study with groups of friends, but I will never go back again and neither will the group of people I study with. Very disappointing. Probably not even worth one star.

Far better than I expected!. Ok, first let me say that the reports of the owner being an ass are not unexpected - I knew him in college and he apparently has not changed.

So, I'm in Houston with the wife, Brasil is about the last place that I'm planning on eating at, as I really don't want to run into Dan. My wife and I are looking for someplace to grab a bit, and she notices a patio full of folks, and we decided to let her out so she could go get in line while I found a place to park. Parking was not impossible, but I did have to circle the neighborhood a few times. As I'm driving past the restaurant, naturally I see the sign... and think... what are the odds!

We waited in line for about 5 mins... not bad, the place was busy, neat crowd, mixed ages, singles, couples...

Guy at the counter was a bit hurried, but not rude, and everyone we saw was busy... and there were plenty of staff there. We ordered a blue cheese BLT and a mushroom pizza.

Food took a bit of time to get out, but the place was pretty full, so we expected it. Food was delivered to the table with a smile, no problem.

The BLT was incredible and was the best BLT I've ever had. (wife just moaned as she ate!) The blue cheese, the quality of the bacon and the rest of the ingredients were perfect.

The mushroom pizza was really good (I'd place it second best mushroom pizza I've ever had).

So, contrary to my expectations, food was GREAT, atmosphere was very good, staff was fine... (Dan was not to be seen).

Would I go back - YES!

I'm as surprised as anyone... good place, great food, consistent owner...

Terrible staff. Stood in line and for 15 mins and watched staff file sugar roll utenSils drink coffee all while 1 slow person manned the register. And the staff has NO PERSONALITY!

Big disappointment. Highly touted restaurant did not deliver. The food is interesting but bland. The breakfast burrito was boring and the whole grain waffle was so dry we had to scrape the meager drab of syrup we were given from its cup just to finish it. They gave us chorizo instead of tofu on the burrito and then wouldn't give us a new one beacuse we ate too much of it before realizing it! I'll never come back to this overrated mess of a restaurant!

EWWWWWWWWWWWWW. OMG. This place is gross. My bf invited me to go here with him because he went there before (when I asked "is it good?" he said "ehhhhh") and it was convenient since we were in the area.

First of all, parking sucks! I'm scared my car will get keyed, stolen, or hit. Second of all, when we walk in, there's such disorganization that I'm a little confused. Where do we order? Where's the menus? Do we seat ourselves? We went on a Wednesday afternoon, so it was fairly dead.

When we ordered, the guy up front was really rude... he wasn't blatantly rude, but he had this sarcastic, snobby undertone. He looked like a busboy, to be honest... maybe he was filling in for the day, who knows.

ANYWAY, I ordered broccoli and cheese soup and a caesar salad. My boyfriend ordered a "kobe burger". To drink, we ordered water. The guy who took our order filled our cups with water from the sink without a filter (GROSS) and there was this little shabby corner where you get your own lemons and silverware. Didn't look sanitary at all.

This place was huge, but we opted to sit outside. Ok, first strike: there were globs of bird feces here and there which almost made me lose my appetite. We sat at the cleanest table we could find with only about one or two drops of poop.

Second strike: Our food took forever to come out... but I won't really count that as a FULL strike. What completes this strike is that my soup was literally WATER with old cheese flakes and broccoli bits. How can you mess up soup? Seriously?! My caesar salad was tiny and wasn't very tasty. It was the worst soup I've ever had in my life. Campbell's soup tastes better than what this place serves.

My boyfriend's kobe burger didn't taste like kobe beef at all... it tasted like ground beef (mixed with bits and pieces of kobe beef).

What's the deal with this place? The food is absolutely horrible and it is dark and dingy inside. I don't get why people like Brasil so much. It's gross!

Third strike: Well, there's not really a third strike, I guess.... actually, wait. Yeah there is: the service sucked.

I'd advise you NOT to eat here... and if you do, do not order the soup at all costs.

Never coming back here again and if any of the people we know asks about this place, I will definitely recommend them any other 'restaurant' but this one. My boyfriend and I are not picky eaters or customers by all means (although most of our ratings for places aren't exceptional...hey, can't blame us for not being satisfied). We just expect good food for what we pay for and we hate rude service. If you are the same as us, you will definitely take our review into consideration and stay away from this overrated place.
