Tips for Cali Sandwich & Fast Food

Great place for a mouthful. I love their sandwiches you can always tell that the ingredients are fresh because of the fresh flavor and the refreshing feel of their food.

Are you serious?. I went back to Cali recently for salt toasted tofu--that was a nice dish. My tablemates also ordered sweet thai chili tofu and curry tofu, all tasted nice. However, I really have to differ with the other reviews on this page regarding their sandwiches. Really? The best in town? Hardly. These dried up little sticks don't have much to write home about flavorwise. I've been to other sandwich shops. This place... eh. Maybe the best in the neighborhood. And I'm not even sure about that. But the best in town? Stop kidding yourself. And if you're not... try a different sandwich place. REALLY.

Awesome!. The grilled pork on vermicelli might be the perfect meal. Layers of fresh veggies with cool rice noodles and then topped with grilled pork is a symphony of flavour. I don't live here but look forward to Cali's everytime I visit my mother.

P.S. The grilled pork sandwich with fried egg is genious!

Cheap and good. These people do not know how to make you feel welcome in their restaurant. But they do know how to make a bad a$$ sandwich and some really great soup for a few bucks. Don't order a soda. They use cans and there are no refills.

I love this place! YOU GO NOW!

Cali Sandwich. I quite don't understand the name "Cali Sandwich" but it really doesn't matter. I was getting out of school and only had about five bucks and some "chump change" to play with. I wondered in to this vacant lot and looked at the menu before I hooped on the Metrorail. It didn't take me long to get two bar-b-que pork grilled sandwiches. I seen the price $2.19 and immediately jumped on them. The best five bucks I ever spent. Now before I spend my money I make sure I save five just for two great sandwiches.

Nice Place. As a vegetarian this is a wonderful restaurant. I live in the medical center and found this place from a friend?s recommendation, and I?m hoping you'd do the same. I suggest the tofu sandwich, the bread is baked, and the stuffing?s are plentiful.

Great value for great food. Cali Sandwich is probably the best bang-for-your-buck that you'll find anywhere near Downtown. The appearance and cleanliness may leave a little to be desired, but I've been eating there for years and have never found so much as a hair in my food. $2 grilled pork sandwiches are excellent, but everything they have is an great value for what you get: lots of healthy food for a low price. Their vermicelli bowls, hot french coffees, and smoothies are also outstanding. Vietnamese food in general is pretty healthy stuff, so even if you eat a lot, you are not going to pack on the pounds (my co-workers and I haven't). The service is debatable at first, but if you become a regular customer and they recognize you when you come in, the service is top-notch. They value repeat business. Also, if you are at all worried about the looks of the place, or the cramped size, the owner confirmed that they are going to be moving to a bigger space in the same shopping center which, as others have mentioned, is nearly done being remodeled. Hopefully this will improve the long lines and service speed. Overall though, if you are looking for cheap, fast, and healthy, Cali is a great way to go. $5 will get you a bowl of rice, a 8-inch sandwich, and a coffee (or smoothie) and you'll be stuffed. Just make sure to take the jalapeno out of your sandwich if you don't like things really spicy!

Editorial Review. Nondescript Vietnamese table service restaurant serves low-priced sandwiches and vermicelli noodle dishes in southwest Houston.

Decent Food. The food is decent. Not the best I've had. It is cheap, but considering the enviroment, it needs to be. I've notice the building is being remodeled but apparantly not them. Needs to be a little bit cleaner. Had the tofu sandwich and some rolls. I'll give it another shot....

Don't Stop at the Sandwiches!!!!. Sure, sure, the $2 grilled pork sandwiches are the best in Houston, but there is so much else at Cali's to enjoy! The noodle bowls (vermicelli, grilled meat, lettuce, cucumber and other goodies) are irresistible. Very clean and crispy taste, very filling, low calories. (Numbers 10, 11, 12 or so on the menu.) They come with dipping sauce, which I simply dump into the bowl along with an extra squirt of the red Sricha chili sauce. The Vietnamese fried eggrolls are fabulous, and this restaurant doesn't skimp on the cilantro, mint and basil accompaniments. For meat eaters, Bo Luc Lac is the dish to order. The food here is far and away of better quality--and much cheaper--than the Kim Son chain. (But stick to the Vietnamese dishes - the Chinese fare is only so-so.)
