“Great place to eat in big parties, and a social atmosphere.”
“Everything that I ate was great specially the dessert!”
“The mandatory valet service (unless you are on foot) is a small irritation, but combined with pricey bad drinks and mediocre service, I left in a sour mood after what should have been a celebratory evening.”
“great american/southwestern food”
“Service is always slow; the entrees have lost their originality; the menu on the whole has become boring.”
“For those of us who feel like having great food in a fun atmosphere with great music next door, we will just have to be part of the non-complaining masses that continue to frequent this restaurant by the thousands.”
“It is just very consistent and for the past 13 years I can say that I have no complaints and only have to say that every dining experience at the fabulous restaurant in the heart of Montrose has been an unforgettable have to go back next week experience!”
“The food is good enough to overshadow some of the stuck-up waiters.”
“People will pay a good price when a lovely evening comes together as it should.”
“The service was abominable, it took 20 minutes and 2 order to get our wine, we were brought the wrong appetizer and one wrong entree, and the replacement entree arrived 15 minutes after everyone else's meal.”
Disappointing food and rude manager. We have not been to Ruggles in years, and what a disappointment it was. It was at one time our favorite brunch spots. This was our first time back since they had closed for over a year after the hurricane. I ordered the crab omelet and the crab had an offensive fishy smell. B I ate only the avocado and eggs and avoided the crab. We gave our server the Living Social coupon I had purchased that is valid through June. He informed me that they were not honoring the coupons. I then spoke with the manager and he refused to take my coupon. I insisted that they either comp the meal or accept the coupon, he eventually agreed to comp the meal, but was extremely rude. We will never be back.
Crowded, Loud and Rude!.
Let me start by saying the food is not the reason for the 2 star review. The food was great. Really great. What ruined the whole experience was the rude management. We purchased a groupon type voucher for the restaurant and made sure we read all of the exceptions, exclusions, etc....
When it came time to pay, they refused to accept them and said that their owner was posting fraudulent coupons on to try and drum up business. They said they have a policy to not accept them any more. Even as we explained there were advertisements posted THAT SAME DAY for Ruggles, they basically called us liars. After very heated back and forth exchange, the finally agreed to a $35 credit off of our $300 bill!!!
It was not so much the fact that they would not take the coupon, but the rude insulting way it was handled. The manager who was all of maybe 25 was arrogant, ignorant and rude.
Despite the fact that the food was great - I will NEVER go back.
After a month of bad press then this experience on top of it, sealed the deal. Other patrons around us who also heard the exchange we horrified as well and agreed that coming back was not likely.
Dont waste you money here. Food was good, service OK. The Manager on Duty was a real jerk. He was very rude and had a terrible attitude. Spend your money somewhere else.
Not worht it.. Just not worth it. My salad was swimming in a terrible dressing. We also order just a bowl of pasta with butter for a child and was charged $13.00! That was more than my fancy salad. The manager would not do anything either. The service was okay, the place looks cool, I just would not go wasting my money there again.
Poor management.
Very disappointed. A patient of mine bought me a gift certificate for $100 and this was just before Ruggles closed for remodeling. When they reopened, they claimed they lost their records for the gift certificates and were unable to honor them. What a scam. I would never return there nor would I recommend this place. There are plenty of other places who operate under higher principles.
What a shame.
Mixed feelings.
We had a reservation and were seated immediately, we ordered two appetizers: hummus and the crab/avocado tower and both were delightful. But the entrees were a different story. My daughter ordered their vegetable plate and I ordered the mixed grill, special of the day. Both came drenched with a dark brown sweet sweet reduction glaze of some sort. The antelope in my mixed grill was just a piece of chewing gum. Both dishes were sent back to the kitchen.
The vegetable side dishes are normally my favorite and they changed that too. But another family member ordered the sea bass, now that was perfectly cooked.
All in all, it was ok. Will I go back? Probably yes.
Awful, Awful, Awful.
While I’ve always been a fan of Ruggles’ food, their service and commitment to their customers is absolutely abysmal. My last attempt to eat there was the night of Valentine’s. I made a reservation well in advance for 8:30 pm. Upon arrival, not only could I not make it in the door, I was greeted by a handful of angry patrons who were apparently not treated very well.
Their story was as follows… They had a 7pm reservation and were not seated until 8pm. After they were seated, they waited for 20 minutes without ever even being greeted by their waiter, much less given an opportunity to order a drink. 80 minutes past their reservation time, they couldn’t even order a drink, so they picked up and left the restaurant.
After 15 minutes, I finally made it to the hostess station to let them know that I had arrived. It was 8:20, and my reservation was for 8:30. They told me that it would be at least an hour before I would be seated. I explained that ruining someone’s valentine’s plans was a horrible thing to do, and they responded with two interesting replies… First, “I’m sorry, but there’s nothing I can do.” I disagree. What they could and should have done was either not take reservations in the first place, or not seat those that didn’t have reservations. Then came reply number two… “We’re pushing people out as quickly as we can.” Nice! So others that had reservations, as well as my party if/when we ever get seated, will be rushed through what we hoped would be a special night. No thanks!
I will not be going back. If you are looking for a special dinner, especially on a Friday or Saturday night, I would choose one of Houston’s many other restaurants that respects the importance of a fine dining experience. Ruggles is an absolute joke.
So glad to see it re opened!. I can't tell you how happy I am to see Ruggles Grill finally re opened! Love the food, love the staff, love the remodeling. Lately I've been eating alot of their tomato soup with the puff pastrie dome, due to the terrible Houston weather. SO good.
It's Official....Ruggles Rests on their name!. I'm not an artist, but let me paint a little picture for you...ever since I have gone to Ruggles, they have always messed up reservations. So why should Mother's Day be any different...I should have known better! The front desk is completely disorganized, they didn't have enough wait staff, and people were complaining left and right! My experience to make a good Mothers Day impression was to arrive with "No" reservation after it was confirmed...enter into a restaurant that was "Arctic Cold"...every women was wearing their Sons sports jacket...the wait staff was so behind...people were leaving there bills at the table and waiters didn't even know if they had paid or not...I had to give my credit card to the front desk! I won't even get into the fact that they were so disorganized that in a panic they knocked over glasses which broke near our feet ..Cut my foot... The bottom Line!!! Accidents happen ... but under "No" circumstance should an owner let a Manager run a restaurant like this...Understaffed, and doing the best you can ... isn't a comment I want my sister-in-law to get when she asks three times to get my nephews orange juice refilled...she had to do it herself at the bar. Food was great...but I suggest the chef get a new gig at another restaurant soon because Ruggles can't rely on him forever!!.. Ruggles is Done!
My new favorite restaurant in Houston. Went to Ruggles for a friend's birthday party and had a wonderful time! The food was absolutely amazing and very reasonably priced. The wines were excellent and the desserts were fantastic. We were already impressed with the presentation and quality of our meals, but the desserts were truly amazing. Highly recommended if you want to impress your friends, family, or colleagues - but don't want to spend a fortune doing so. The atmosphere is fun, colorful, and not stuffy at all. This is my new favorite restaurant in Houston!!
