“The prices are reasonable, and the service is excellent.”
“Food, service, and price were all good.”
Excuse me. I ended up in this hole in the wall quite by accidend but went in anyway since I have enjoyed some great finds in seemingly seedy establishments before like our own famous "Last Concert Cafe". But this was not to be... the bar which sits far back into this thrown-together architectural puzzle was actually the only saving grace of the evening. The employess treat this as a rest stop for the evening and couldn't be bothered to recommend something off the menu after initially admitting not to expect too much when asked about the quality of the menu. Tamales served were all dough and sat upon my plate without any sauce or accompaniment of any kind. I picked the three apart to gather a morsel of meat and threw in what seemed like week-old hot sauce and went back into the bar to wash down the acidity excuse for a meal before it killed me. Go see for yourself if there is not another place that you can be.
I want to like it more.....
First trip:
Service was good. Sat in the little room where the bathrooms were...kinda disgusting that the bathrooms were RIGHT THERE. Food was great for the price. Went to the bathroom, awkwardly a few feet from our table, and the "thundermug" and wall were splattered with (Citysearch won't let me say the word that means the red stuff that comes our when you cut yourself) BLUD! I mean, like some poor mug took a shotgun blast to the bunghole while sitting there and blasted it all over the walls. Otherwise, they wouldn't have been bad restrooms for a cheap Mexican place. Wrote it off as an off day, maybe someone got booty-murdered in the restroom, and said we'd come back for some more cheap eats after enough booze....
Second trip:
Sat ourselves in the front area/along Richmond...in the cheap plastic portable picnic tables and chairs in front of the juke box, thinking it would be smart to be AWAY from the restroom area. But, we soon found that it stunk bad like a port-a-shite in that WHOLE area (tried to find a better smelling area). Not overwhelming...but just enough to not be able to get it out of your head for a while. Food, service, and price were all good.
Me and my reviews are largely about the low-buck joints, and I don't expect a lot when it comes to how fancy the joint is, but "twice shy" is the rule...and when your bathroom at home is a nicer dining room to eat (and less stanking like an outhouse) than the place you're paying money to eat....well...that's just nasty.
Sorry, I really wanted to make this place a usual...the food and service was good for the price...but I guess I won't be back. :(
what happened to chapultepec?. if you scroll down and read the post "my favorite restaurant in the world" that was me four years ago. since then, the quality of the food has diminished. I mean, it has REALLY GONE DOWN. still, it's convenient and cheap, i guess.
Acceptable if it's 3AM and you need a place to eat. The food is okay but the service is terrible. The last time that we went, we sat in the front near the register (where someone is ALWAYS standing). They brought our drinks. 15 minutes later we had to flag down a waitress to take our order. 30 minutes after that we had to flag down yet another waitress to check on our order. She shrugged her shoulders and just kept walking. I finally asked the man behind the register if we could just pay for our Iced Teas and leave. He simply said "it's okay" and made a "shoo-ing" motion with his hands. We'll never go back.
Best effin' plave to get some Mexi on!.
The food is 'holy mother of god' awesome! The queso has to be made of Jesus tears. The staff is so sweet so I don't know what everyone is complaining about. Maybe you're all used to having your butts wiped for you O_o
My only complaint; hot waiter stood me up on a date. WTF?? Meh, oh well, I can still go back there, eat great cheap food, park easily becasue it has the best d*** parking anywhere in the Montrose Area and sit back, have a drink and look at the pretty Latino waiter...wwrrraaarrr! It's my fav eatery.
Always open and always cheap!. They are 24 hrs and nothing on the minue is over ten dollars. As far as the food goes, well, some days its faboo, others not so much and there doesn't seem to be any rhym or reason to it. 3 out of four times the queso is great but occasionally its watery. The chips are usually good but every once in a while they are stale and grose. The salsa can be spicey and fresh or watery and bland. The chicken quesadilla are great. We are regulars there and to be honest if I could figure out a time of the month or particular cook that was better than the others I would only go durring that time. Unfortunatly, you never know till you go. I still recomned though, you might get lucky!
Mexican food with a hospital kitchen twist and less than friendly staff.
This is one of Houston worst excuses for a Mexican Restaurant that you can find. Bland food in a bland setting with very unhappy staff who wishes they were somewhere else. The food is bland, the dining area isn't clean so you can just imagine what the kitchen looks like. They could start serving Pace Picante sauce and it would move them up several notches and give you something to dip the much higher quality chips into. I've gone back trying to discover what some people rave about, but it just isn't there!! But I guess there is a group of Non-Foodies out there that appreicate bland tasteless food and appreciate Chapultepec's style of food. If you're really in the mood for some GOOD Mexican food travel a little further west down Richmond and you'll find La Tapatia Taqueria, Maria Selma, El Tiempo Cantina, and more.
When the fans of Chapultepec are near I-10 and Gessner, they definately need to a visit to El Gallo Mexican Restaurant at 2116 S Gessner Rd. They'll be doing back flips over the blandness they discover.
friendly service.
I have never had a bad service experience here. Friendly welcoming people. The cashier lady could use a little pick me up..please smile.
As for the food...well it's good. Not the greatest but good.
A couple of good veggie options. TRY the Veggie Chimichanga!!! great.
I love a place that always keeps your drinks filled and an endless supply chips and salsa!!!!
Love that salsa and those Panuchos!!. I worked nights last year and ate at Chapultepec SOOO often for lunch- A minimum of once a week for sure! I agree that that cashier woman is awful. I dislike her incredibly - she has been consistently rude to me, and I was a regular! Working days now, I hadn't been back in 9 months. I had the pleasure of going again last night and enjoying their fresh [tho not very spicy] salsa, yummy chips, and the most awesome 'panuchos' ever made. Try the panuchos! You'll LOVE them! I'd never even had a panucho before this place, and I cannot recreate the flavor of them no matter how hard I try at home. *Do* treat yourself to a margarita, but keep in mind they are NOT the best in town, and be specific about how much sweet and sour you do or don't want - because it can taste fairly odd.
